Publisher's summary

Roller Girl meets School of Rock in this middle grade novel about identity, friendship, and riot-grrrl power by librarian and debut author Celia C. Perez.

There are no shortcuts to surviving your first day at a new school - you can't fix it with duct tape like you would your Chuck Taylors. On day one, 12-year-old Malu (Maria Luisa, if you want to annoy her) inadvertently upsets Posada Middle School's queen bee, violates the school's dress code with her punk rock look, and disappoints her college-professor mom in the process. Her dad, who now lives a thousand miles away, says things will get better as long as she remembers the first rule of punk: Be yourself.

The real Malu loves rock music, skateboarding, zines, and Soyrizo (hold the cilantro, please). And when she assembles a group of like-minded misfits at school and starts a band, Malu finally begins to feel at home. She'll do anything to preserve this, which includes standing up to an anti-punk school administration to fight for her right to express herself!

Great Story but who edited?

This story is too precious not to have better sound editing. The narrator was incredible, however one can hear every breath she takes as she reads. It’s quite distracting and disrespectful to the performer and story. Maybe the publishers would consider a remix?

Great, balanced, educating book for all ages!

I liked how the story was about a Mexican girl, trying to find friends at her new school. Though there could have been that extra something maybe about going back home. Also a great book to learn a little about Hispanic culture, while getting prepared for the next big scene!

Real struggles that kids have, and how they can overcome!

This was an amazing book that I read and listened to with my 4th grade GATE students. We were able to bring out conversations about parents understanding them, making friends, standing up for what you believe in and we discussed the ethics of all the issues. We were also able to look at multiple perspectives, changes over time, and several other elements of depth and complexity. The reading was clear and animated, and the reader’s Spanish and accent was great. My students loved this book!

amazing

My 9 year old son loved this book. It was part of his school assignment, they only provided him with part of the book. He wanted to finish the story so I got the audible book for him.

Great Book on Intersectional Identity!

I recommend this book for all the Latinx punks, artists, weirdos and outsiders. This story is great about being true to yourself and finding your crew along the way.

An unforgettable and dynamic main character

Malu' is an unforgettable and dynamic character who transcends identity politics with their kind heart. Malu's supporting characters are not only diverse... but they all add depth to Malu's story. And, I love how LatinX FolXs are celebrated in this fictional story of self-acceptance!
