Publisher's Summary

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the Western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits or, best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband, Almanzo, grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

Correlates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts.

    "Oh My...Part Two"

This narrator has obviously never been in the country.

The chapter about Almanzo training his calves...

"Giddap" is pronounced as though one is saying "Git up", not "Gha DAP" with emphasis on DAP, as she says it. Worst yet, "Gee" is pronounced with a hard G sound, yet she pronounces it as "Ghee".

Could you folks at Audible please make sure that future narrators have full command over the English language before you turn them loose to read? Thanks.

    Story
"wonderful way to spend a childhood."

Enjoy this book as an adult with your children by your side. There are some great scenes in this book. I especially like the story of the pig and the candy, I also liked the story about the Colt STARLIGHT. the part where the parents go away for a week and the kids are left at home to cook and clean is hilarious, almost like the kids getting into the cookie jar with all the sugar they used. The narrator is perfect and has a wonderful voice for this book and makes it sound like you are really there as Almanzo. Laura Ingalls Wilder hit a homerun with me with this book and I'm 58 so I guess I'm just a kid at heart.

    "Great book!!!"

I looooove all of these books not crazy bout the narrator. I like his objective of how he trains his calves🐂its also kinda neat how different his childhood was compared too Laura's. Like he talks about how his Father is an important man and Laura's family is so poor her father has to hunt for a living, and have only one cow , and Almanzo's Father has lots of livestock ( as opposed to dead stock haha) . I'm sad she could not write more books( or longer books) while she was living. One cow!! How could you live with one cow??!?

    Story
"I could listen to Cherry Jones alllll day...."
If you could sum up Farmer Boy in three words, what would they be?

    Good, old, honest.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Almanzo of course!

What does Cherry Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I can't imagine this book being read aloud by anyone else. She does a phenomenal job. I wish she would do the Little Britches series too!

    Any additional comments?

We have listened to this book again and again. It never gets old.

    "childhood treasure"

one of my favorite childhood books. Didn't care for the narrator's voice or pacing. Was she trying to sound like an enthusiastic little boy? Not sure but it wasn't written in first person.

    "7 year old boy's review"

This is the best book ever. I like that it is set on a farm and it all the cool stuff they did. They get to do lots of grown up stuff but also have fyun. The ending made me sad that it ends! I really like Almanzo's dad. It feels good inside to hear about him.

    "Almost perfect..."

This is one of my all-time favourite books. I love the story, the subject, the style of writing, and the narration here almost did it justice. Just a shame that a couple of times I was distracted by what I am sure were mis-pronunciations and which had me reaching for the (American) dictionary to check ! I realise that there can be huge regional variations in accents and I thought Ms Jones voice well suited the material but there still has to be a standard pronunciation or the meaning is lost. Primer and primmer are not the same word!
