Publisher's Summary

For 60 years Eleanor Estes' classic novel about a family struggling to get along in the early part of the century has charmed and delighted readers with its warmth and gentle humor. Now it comes to life in a full cast recording that will have you laughing out loud...and occasionally wiping away a tear. Our whole cast fell in love with this book, and we predict that you will, too.

Critic Reviews

"The performances are splendid. A woman with a clear and winsome voice performs the narrative. The characters are performed by individual cast members every bit as winsomely and with great verve." (AudioFile)

"Ideal family listening fare." (Booklist

Love all Eleanor Estes books, hate this performanc

How could the performance have been better?

Can't even stand to listen to this. It sounds like a robot is reading it, and there are even words that seem to be skipped. Pity, because I love the Estes books overall. Seems like the narrator is speed reading, as another reviewer said. It would be an improvement if it sounded like a real person was reading it.

Review by three siblings and their mom

I LOVE it! -Emily
It was good. I prefer one narrator over many actors. -Charlie
I enjoy it. -Lydia
A good read with much to discuss about living in previous decades. The ensemble did a great job and it was nice to hear a dramatic version of this book. -Mom

A book of short stories.

We liked that each chapter was a short story with the Moffett family. it was great to here stories of a simpler time when children were both independent, responsible and free. However, we did not care for the individual character narration.

Good story but narrator hard to understand 🙂

I love the story. It is a nice thing to read and I would recommend the book to families especially with younger kids. But I think the part about Halloween is read a bit to eerily...
The narrator is ok but at first she is hard to understand after a wile you get used to her reading but I would still recommend the book more. The audiobook was just not my favorite. Still it is nice to listen to if your looking for a quiet but enjoyable story.

Cute stories of family life of yesteryear

We enjoyed the simple stories about family life in simpler days. The narration was of poor quality. The voice for Mama was emotionless, monotone and the other adults weren't much better. The narration disrupted and distracted from the sweet stories.

Great story and cool narrator!

I love the story and having all the different voices telling the story. It gives the characters even more personality and the reading is well done

Moffats review

My children enjoyed this book overall. At times they did not understand all of the words due to the year it was written. The language is a little older at times. The escapades of the children in this large family did make us laugh on many occasions throughout the story.
