Publisher's Summary

It's the turn of the 20th century in New York's Lower East Side and a sense of adventure and excitement abounds for five young sisters - Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte and Gertie. Follow along as they search for hidden buttons while dusting Mama's front parlor, or explore the basement warehouse of Papa's peddler's shop on rainy days. The five girls enjoy doing everything together, especially when it involves holidays and surprises. But no one could have prepared them for the biggest surprise of all!

Great Family Read Aloud

I loved this series growing up, and I have enjoyed sharing it with my children (girl, 9 and boy, 7)! However, I have really enjoyed having the audible version this time around! The reader does an excellent job of voicing the characters so that you remember that many of them are immigrants!

Recommended

This was a sweet, wholesome story that my five year old daughter and I both enjoyed! It is a story about simple things like lost library books, family celebrations, eating soup, and going to the beach. It held our attention to the point where the story had to be paused if one of us needed to leave the room.

ok book

I liked this book but feel it is geared to pre-teen and early teens. should be in that category.

Very cute

This book was adorable, and wholesome. I enjoyed reading along with my kiddo, who also thought it was sweet. Looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Good story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes

Would you be willing to try another book from Sydney Taylor? Why or why not?

Maybe

Did Suzanne Toren do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, it was a little dry for my boys.

Any additional comments?

Narrator was very very slow. We listened to this at 1.5x speed because the kids were antsy.
