Publisher's summary

Broken. Dead. Failure. That's what Jared felt every time he looked in the mirror. A man drowning himself in alcohol and loose women. That's what he had become. After all, that's all he was good for -until Alzerro King f--ked up his day. One sentence completely altered his world. Hiding someone while working with the FBI was the last thing he wanted to do.

Then he met her: Isabella Vincenzo. Isabella wasn't a victim. She wasn't prey to the monsters that lurked in the dark - at least that's what she told herself. Trouble had found Isabella and, now, somewhere in the middle of the US, she was being kept. Hidden. Held against her will from the monsters. Little did she know: she traded one monster for another.

Contains mature themes.

Determination to Overcome

Enjoyed the characters and it was also great that characters from previous books were included. Narrative was very good. No cheating or angst.

Another broken man saved magically by a woman

This tale of Jared and Isabella is formulaic from the plot to the execution, including dialogue and descriptors. Two hours into the story, and I was ready to call it quits. Unfortunately, I had 4 more hours to go. Finally, I gave up and fast-forwarded through the last 2 hours of the story.

I didn’t understand source of Jared’s intense attraction to Isabella. Lust, yes, but Jared’s level of intensity towards and struggle with wanting Isabella, no. it was immediate and intense, almost uncontrollable. At the same time, he was angry with her. Yet she was magically a source of calm, able to soothe him like nothing and no one else. It made no sense. But it flowed with the sappiness and unbelievable statements made very quickly by Jared to Isabella. He took adoration to a frightening level. It made me sick on my stomach. Fortunately, they didn’t immediately jump into bed.

Also, Isabella got over her ideal with more ease than would be expected. She was forced to have her virginity ransomed to the highest bidder, but it didn’t deter the 18-year-old from quickly wanting to be sexual with Jared. Jared’s sister, Brie, wanted Isabella to ”save” Jared, and Isabella, at 18, had no problem with it. She was drawn to his “brokenness” even with her own messed up life.

The narrators didn’t help my experience with this story. Isabella and Jared only had an accent with the male narrator. Using 2 narrators and having both portray the same characters made listening confusing at times; that’s a downside of using 2 narrators toggling between the same characters.

Not worth the PTSD points…poorly constructed story that wanders and is BORING. Also, PREACHY to SA survivors!!

Narration: one gets used to the 21 year old who sounds like a granny, but the indecisive accents are very annoying, also…my mind speak is my accent….but hers isn’t…, it takes one out of the story to have a character using two different accents. Male…again, pick an accent.

Story: Poorly constructed and not worth the PTSD points and the preachy recovery crap throughout these books. I don’t wish ill on anyone, but the author needs to speak with SA survivors to make a believable character. This is a pattern in their books…having other characters as mind readers who know exactly what the other character is thinking and how they process trauma (usually the man knows what the woman is thinking). I certainly don’t know any women or men I have worked with that thinks like a TOXIC POSITIVITY PAMPHLET for SA survivors, this includes myself.

Trauma changes the brain and one can’t toxic positivity themselves out of it. The last 10+ minutes is TOXIC, saccharine waxing poetic to the point of wanting to tie the author and editor to uncomfortable chairs and make them listen to real stories about SA and what real recovery looks like.

Instant love and instant SA recovery. Ain’t life grand in this delusional author’s head (and editor’s). I know they’ve made progress, but still cheese out for 15 minutes at the end of every d___ book.
