Publisher's Summary

Explore the captivating history of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful forces the world has ever seen. But this isn’t just the story of conquest or the incredible system of institutions that made it possible.

The Roman Empire is not yet another boring historical topic. On the contrary, it wakes our imagination, scares us, and entertains us.

This is the story of the fascinating men and women - the emperors, their wives, parents, brothers, sisters, and children - who gave the empire its characteristic charm. Some of them, like Marcus Aurelius and Antoninus Pius, were virtuous and wise; others - like Caligula, Commodus, and Caracalla - were monstrous, insane predators whose thirst for blood and sexual habits were beyond believable.

This is the story of the most important people and events between the two crucial events - the rise of Augustus in the first century BC and the final sack of Rome in the late fifth century AD.

Some of the topics covered in this audiobook include:

  • From the Republic to the Empire: The rise of Octavian
  • The age of Augustus
  • The Julio-Claudian dynasty after Augustus: From Tiberius to Nero
  • Civil war and the year of the four emperors (AD 68-69)
  • The Flavians
  • The Nerva-Antonine dynasty: The five good emperors (and a couple of not-so-good ones)
  • Some new emperors
  • Crises, civil wars, and divisions: The long and painful decline
  • Two Empires: East and West
  • And a great deal more you don't want to miss out on!

Just What I Needed

Just what I needed. A history of Rome that wouldn't take me a year to complete. Excellent, although it focuses mainly in the military aspect of the Empire. A little more about social policy, habits, natural disasters like Pompey, sexual habits, society and life in general would be appreciated.

Decent Audible

A decent overview of Rome under the early emperors. Of course, nothing you read will tell you everything there is to know, but this book is a worthwhile addition to your library.

History Described

I enjoy 'quick' books; but, your writing reminded of 'cliff notes'. It was a very quick look at the 'Roman' history. There was a 'litany' of Roman leaders; but, said so little about each 'leader'. I think there is a 'belief' that sometime in the history of Rome a man called 'Moses' and the exodus from Rome.

Interesting Road

Interesting read that follows the Roman empire from its inception until falling apart. The focus is on the long list of rulers over many centuries and was enlightening. It reads as easily as a novel. I would prefer to have more insights into how they ruled their far flung empire.

Great

Great 👍 Rome history is not as good as Greek mythology and history since Greeks were the first to rule. Rome stole and destroyed many historical things.

If Roman history had Cliff notes this would be it. Not enough detail to qualify as a text but more than enough to get you interested. Recommended.

Four Stars

I gave it four stars because is a great summary of the history of Rome, but I personally would have liked for it to go into more details about the fall of the republic and the establishment of the Empire... But again this seems to be more like a fast paced intro book into the history of Rome and for that purpose, is perfect.
