Publisher's summary

From the number one New York Times best-selling author.

Betty Jean already has her hands full when her grown daughter leaves her two young sons in her care. In between dealing with her other adult children, two opinionated sisters, an ill husband, and her own postponed dreams - BJ still manages to hold down a job delivering room service at a hotel.

Her son Dexter is about to be paroled from prison; Quentin, the family success, can’t be bothered to lend a hand; and taking care of two lively grandsons is the last thing BJ thinks she needs. But who asked her?

Critic reviews

"A well-crafted story of acceptance, forgiveness, and hope. McMillan deftly weaves her tale of a black Los Angeles family’s disharmony around the narratives of bickering sisters Betty Jean, Arlene, and Venetia as they watch their kids stumble into adulthood.... Strong-hearted kids lead the family back to each other - but McMillan’s story belongs to the middle-aged steel magnolias who value loyalty above all." (Publishers Weekly)

"McMillan writes jauntily and with customary good humor.... Her story affirms the value of love and family, to say nothing of the strength of resolute women in the absence of much strength on the part of those few men who happen to be in the vicinity.... A solid, well-told story." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Remember Getting to Happy, Waiting to Exhale, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back? Well, you won’t likely forget Terry McMillan’s Who Asked You? either” (Raleigh News & Observer)

An Enjoyable Read!

I really enjoyed this book. At first it was a little depressing because it felt really familiar. I have personally encountered most of these things. Terry captured the real feelings of people who are going through these challenges. I laughed, cried, cussed, and rejoiced. Of course, my favorite character was Betty Jean! I absolutely loved her. She reminded me of my own grandma who had to do the same type of things for me. I am now enjoying a good life because of her sacrifices. I especially enjoyed how the book ended. Terry didn't allow BJ to endure all of these things just to die and not get to reap the rewards for her sacrifice. This alone made this book awesome!

Ms McMillian

Loved my first audible book. This storyline made me not want to stop listening and hurry to get to the next chapter. I felt like I knew the characters and the readers made them come to life. Really enjoyed.

Great Read

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Terry makes the characters so relatable and the storyline seems familiar and not contrived. Phylicia Rashad's voicing made listening so pleasant which helped deal with the voicing of Tammy, nurse Kim, and Trinetta which was not so pleasant. I fell in love with little Ricky and Luther and cried like a baby towards the end of the book as they grew up. Overall, this has been one of my favorite books from Terry and I'd listen again anytime.

This was such a memorable story!

I loved it! I couldn't stop listening to it. Phylicia Rashad's voice is easy to listen to and passionate. The content itself was so well written..Betty Jean is someone I could have easily known...she doesn't feel like "just a character". I would love to listen to this book again and I have told everyone I know about it in hopes of starting a book club!

Excellent as always

Always been a Terry McMillan fan and I love stories with happy endings. I'm just sad that Lee David didn't say more, and that Trinetta never got completely clean. I would love to know how everyone ends up...did Betty Jean marry Warren? Did Arlene heal? Did Tammy and her kids do okay? So many unanswered questions.

Phylicia Rashad has an angels voice

This book was an amazing read and super easy to listen to thanks to the talented Phylicia Rashad. Relatable and funny, I couldn’t find the will to press pause. It was like watching a movie in my head when listening. Now I want to check out her other works. Bravo!
