Story
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Publisher's summary
Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. There he meets the freaks, grifters, and misfits that populate this world. Jacob introduces us to Marlena, beautiful star of the equestrian act; to August, her charismatic but twisted husband (and the circus' animal trainer); and to Rosie, a seemingly untrainable elephant.
Beautifully written, with a luminous sense of time and place, Water for Elephants tells of love in a world in which love's a luxury few can afford.

Featuring original music by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon! It's 2003 and Romy Hall is at the start of two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women's Correctional Facility, deep in California's Central Valley. Outside is the world from which she has been severed: the San Francisco of her youth and her young son, Jackson. Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the absurdities of institutional living, which Kushner evokes with great humor and precision.

10 Stars for LeDoux!
First and foremost, LeDoux is spot on. The narration in this book is remarkable. It couldn't have been done better than it was. Wow. The book was very good as well, but I really do feel like LeDoux is what made this a spectacular experience.
The storyline was interesting and character driven. I enjoyed every moment of it. Everything did get wrapped in a nice little bow, but sometimes that's a good thing. The events were exciting and, once again, made much more so by LeDoux's amazing narration.
Can I give him 10 stars?

Suprisingly captivating
I must admit that I was skeptical about this book, not thinking I would enjoy a story about a circus. The reviews here were so good that I went ahead and boy, was I glad that I did! The characterization in this novel is just superb; Gruen paints complex portraits of so many people. I particularly enjoyed how Jacob's roommate Walter came to life. The (dual) narration was one of the best I've heard in my many Audible listens. Just a wonderful book!

I found this book by browsing through the award winners and I'm so glad I did! The narration was incredible and realistic. The story was so well written I could actually see it unfold in my mind's eye. I find myself thinking about this book over a month after reading it. It will stay with me for a long, long time.

Enough to Satisfy Your Thirst
Any additional comments?
The Benzini Brothers Circus, where most of the action of Water for Elephants take place, bills itself as the Greatest Show on Earth, knows it’s far from that, and yet still delivers quite a performance. That seems a good metaphor for this novel as a whole. It features genuine wonders and it’s easy to get lost in it, but, when you walk outside its tent again, you have to admit there are better circuses (better novels) doing similar things.
I hope that doesn’t come across as too belittling. This show is a good one – at times a very good one. The love story at its heart has its peculiar effectiveness because it takes place in the shadow of the circus with all the odd animals, petty jealousies, and spangled outfits that implies. The story is a familiar one, but that doesn’t keep Gruen from selling it with good energy and effective pacing. And it kept me hanging on with interest to the final pages.
I found I particularly enjoyed the way the novel balances the exotic magic of the circus with the drearier facts of every day (and seemingly well-researched) historical life. I have not seen the movie, yet I found it easy to imagine Reese Witherspoon as Marlena – a kind of effortlessly beautiful woman with substance beneath her surface. Jacob sometimes irritated me with his impulsiveness, but that provides a good counterpoint to his otherwise too clean, Galahad-complexed self.
That said, it grows more violent than the story itself feels licensed to become, and I came to resent some of the present-day parts of the narrative – and the resolution feels a bit unearned, maybe a bit hurried.
The characters of the Benzini Brothers all know that, somewhere, Ringling Brothers stands as the pinnacle of the circus life. For me, reading this a decade after it came out, that pinnacle remains The Night Circus, a book that, in the end, is simply an all-around better show. Read this and enjoy it – everyone should go to the circus every so often – but keep an eye out for the even bigger show as it makes its way to your town.

Good Listen
The story wasn't all sweet as some reviews have written, it had some violence that made the story more believable about the circus life and the people who worked them. The narration was superb as though you were transported into the scene as it was taking place. I think it was worth the time and credit and hope you enjoy it.

great book, very well written
fantastic story line here. Even though it travels back and forth between past and present, it is easy to follow due to 2 different narrators. Showed an interesting side to being old. Funny ending and very comfortable story line. Characters are well developed and I was very drawn into the book. Great stuff.

This somewhat sentimental story is a clever novel that evokes emotions which endure through time. The narrators are magnificent, capturing the characters so well that you frequently forget that you're listening to a book--almost like watching a play. Highly recommended.

Surprising gem
This is an uncomplicated novel but interesting and engrossing none the less. I particularly enjoyed the double speaker narration. One of the lead character, Jacob, as an old man and the other when he was a young man.
In addition to thoroughly enjoying the discovery of how circuses worked back in the first part of the 20th century I was captured by the characters experiences in a retirement home. Anyone with relatives in a home will have no choice but to feel sympathetic.
Its just a story, but it's a good one and worth the listen to enjoy and capture a microcosm of American history.
