Publisher's summary

Orphaned as a child, Mike Bastian was taken in by the legendary outlaw Ben Curry, and raised and trained to take over his empire of crime. Today, Mike is the quickest draw and the stealthiest tracker around, and Ben Curry is getting ready to retire. To test Mike's wings, he has set him a task: the planning and execution of a gold-train robbery.

Now, as he prepares for his first criminal job, Mike must decide whether to follow the path that has been set before him or to carve out a destiny of his own. If he assumes the position of gang leader, he will face deadly competition from within Curry's band, but if he refuses, he may not be allowed to leave the pack alive. The dilemma is further complicated when he falls for Drusilla, Ben Curry's real daughter, who knows nothing of her father's career. Either way Mike chooses, a showdown is in store.

Makes me think of home

These books remind me of being at Papaw and grandmas house with my cousin and uncle watching Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Lone Ranger, or even a John Wayne movie while had lunch after working the ranch all morning.

Needs editing

Classic Lamour. Jim Gough did an outstanding job of narrating but the recording studio did not edit his performance. Many instances of repeated lines, coughs, throat clearing, etc. These were distractions from a good story and storyteller.

Good L’Amour classic, but poor audio quality

The narrator sounded just like an old cowhand. I enjoyed his voice.
But, like others had noted, the audio quality was very poor.
1) clearly no editing had been done
2) the audio “tone” changed several times as if different equipment had been switched out and back again.
3) His occasional stumbles (natural enough) and coughs/clearing voice were left in.
At first, it was easy to overlook, but towards the past couple of chapters it became disruptive.
Audible should pull this book and do some editing before rereleasing it.

BAD EDITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The book was good, the voice actor was good also. I stopped counting how many mistakes were left in. Easily more than 100 mistakes. Just plain sorry!!!!!!

Okay story, poor audio editing.

Rather a simplistic L'Amore story. The narrator has a great gravelly "old-timer" kind of voice that goes well with the story.

The "BAD" part of the story is the audio editing, or rather the lack of it. Many times during the narration, you hear the narrator clear his throat, repeat words, pause in the wrong place or repeat sentences. Also, there are a few places where he restarts reading and the volume level is off.

I have listened to several L'Amore titles, owned by Blackstone Audio, on Audible the past several weeks and this one doesn't show Blackstone in a good light.

Unedited poorly read

This reading was almost completely unedited and what editing was done was done poorly. The narrator even makes comments about his mistakes at times. His voice inflections are all off and it sounds like the first time he'd read the book. The story is a really good one. It's too bad that it's so hard to listen to.

Good book, but needs audio editing.

Love the story and the narrator is wonderful, but none of the reading errors were edited out (including several instances of throat clearing). I would hope that this oversight would be fixed for future listeners.

Son of a gun!

A biography of Mike Bastian, son of Ben Curry, one of the most notorious outlaws on the Owlhoot Trail. Curry was getting old and he wanted to retire to his family. Bastian was twenty-two and ready to take over the gang. Perin would be the problem outlaw, the one that wanted the leadership reigns when Curry retired. There was one more robbery before Curry would retire. The gold train robbery and Curry wanted Bastian to plan it. Bastian met some of his gang in Weaver, introducing himself. Mrs. Regan, Julieanna, and Drucilla came in on the afternoon stage. They wanted directions to Boyle Regan’s ranch, the Z-Bar. This was Curry’s ranch, and these women would be his family. With Curry getting old the sharks were circling. Bastian was hog-tied, some of the outlaws left for the gold train, Perin and others left for the women at the Regan ranch. Another outlaw, Dave Leniker was on his way to take out Curry. Everything was coming quickly to a head with much action to follow.

Great story, terrible editing

it's a great story, read by normally great narrator. but the editing on this one leaves much to be desired, from repeated lines and unnecessary throat clearing to misread words corrected in haste and personal thoughts interjected in the reading. Much of that could and should have been edited out making this a better version . Still worth the time .

Unhappy 🙁

The narration and editing was not up to your own standards nor mine. It was choppy and didn't seem to have appropriate inflection.
