Critic Reviews

"Jane Green's books are warm, witty, sharp and insightful. She writes characters that hook you instantly and situations that make you wince, laugh, or both. She writes with such honesty and zing, it's impossible to stop turning the pages." (Sophie Kinsella)
"Beautifully written, emotionally intense and psychologically fascinating." (Daily Mail)

Good book shame about the narration

I really enjoyed this book but nearly Stopped listening as couldn't bear the veery slooow way jane green enunciates. Positively painful. Pay someone else to read it for you next time! Good story, despite that, albeit somewhat predicable.

Great story but slow narration.

could do work a different narrator, good story and strong characters but the slow narration ruined the overall enjoyment.

Probably a great story but......

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different narrator

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Couldn't get past the first two chapters as the narrator was so awful. Why do authors think they are the only ones that can read their work???? Bill Bryson is another example of a talented writer but who can't narrate his own work.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was flat, without inflection and with pauses in the wrong parts of sentences. Most distracting and irritating. Jane Green is a marvellous author and I have loved her other books that I have read. I first listened to another of her books that she narrates, Saving Grace, and had to have four tries at it before I really got into the story and could, to a certain extent, ignore the dreadful narration because the story was so good.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I couldn't get far enough into it to find any. I have, instead, bought the Kindle edition and will read it.

Any additional comments?

Really disappointed with this book - it takes a lot for me to give up on a book - either audio or hard copy but I had to give up with this one. Such a shame - won't be purchasing any other books which are narrated by this author, though I will continue to buy hard copies of her books.

good book

I don't know why I like Jane Green books so much but I do. Predictable storylines and cartoonish characters but somehow her writing is really engaging. This one is a good example

Narration droll

The narration would put me to sleep. Very hard to tell one character from another.
