Publisher's Summary

Having pursued the remnants of the defeated Army of the Potomac up to the banks of the Susquehanna, General Robert E. Lee is caught off balance when news arrives that General Ulysses S. Grant, in command of over 70,000 men, has crossed that same river, a hundred miles to the northwest, and is advancing down the Cumberland Valley towards Virginia. The two brilliant generals will now meet in a massive battle that will decide the outcome of the war. In Never Call Retreat, Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen bring all of their critically-acclaimed talents to bear in what is destined to be a Civil War classic.

What the Critics Say

"A swiftly paced and authentically grounded novel....The authors' research is impeccable, and their presentation brings events down to a personal level, and, as in any good alternate vision of history, the reader is left believing it could really have happened this way." (Booklist)

"This is the best series around!!!!"

Well, very well, researched and realistic. I think it shows how a very small event can have such ernormous effect on history. I do not think that there is anything that is out of the realm in this book. Do yourself a favor and listen to this whole series...

    "Incredible imagination"

This is a great 'alternative' ending to the Civil War. It reads so true with historically correct personalities, some who survived the actual war don't survive the book. The book is also breathtaking in its geographic accuracy. I happen to be in the area while listening to the book and was able to drive around some of the battle sites....and they are in real life as described in the book.

    Story
"Good story and history - bogged down in details"
What did you love best about Never Call Retreat?

The production is very well done. The story and history are very interesting and informative. But the detail of the stories got confusing to me - admittedly an older reader. I love history and social descriptions of events. But this is too much for me.

Would you recommend Never Call Retreat to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, if you are a student of history or broad social movements. Maybe not if you looking for good story.

What does Boyd Gaines bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Character. Each person portrayed has a distinct personality. Very good.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The detailed description of the pain sometimes made me recoil but in a good way.

    Story
"It did not end in 1863."

I understand that it is a novel, but it is billed as Historically accurate fiction. I have read many Historically accurate books about the Civil War, but this book only served as an avenue to confuse those who are not totally current on Civil War History.

    "An above average historical fiction"

An above average historical fiction told through the perceived minds of the great Generals who lived it. The story is intriguing, and the performance is superb.

Newt is a great historian and his books are wonderful. This one is no exception. I highly recommend it as a thought provoking read using alternative history.

    "Outstanding conclusion"

This series was entertaining realistic and well read. I could not stop listening. The final part, this book, was at times like listening to a football game, I actually felt myself swept up and rooting. I actually wanted to scream "on men, on"
