Publisher's Summary

In a war room in Washington, William Tecumseh Sherman and General Robert E. Lee huddle together and plan their next, joint military operation. In the jungles of Mexico, Ulysses S. Grant is locked in brutal combat with the best of the British Army. And in the heart of the new American South a fragile peace is threatened...

In the dazzling alternate history of Harry Harrison, this is the world as it stands in 1863. Just three years before, a titanic Civil War loomed in America. But an incident involving a British ship and two Confederate spies changed everything. As Abraham Lincoln defied Britain's Lord Palmerston, tensions between the two nations boiled over and Her Majesty's Navy unleashed an attack on American soil aimed at bolstering the Confederate cause. The results were catastrophic.

A stunned North and South put aside their differences and a new kind of war erupted, with Americans fighting side by side against the British on two fronts: in the South and on the Canadian border. Now, Britain has been defeated and America is struggling to keep its union together until another blow is struck. It comes from Mexico, where elite units of Her Majesty's Army including the famed Gurkha fighters are massing for a possible attack through Texas.

Into the gauntlet, Lincoln sends his chosen angel of death, General Grant. But the weary president knows that two centuries of British power will not be ended with a single battle. So his top soldiers, including Lee and Sherman, plan the most daring naval invasion ever launched: an assault on British soil itself. And in a secret that must be protected by an underground army of spies and secret agents, the U.S. will invade the Emerald Isle to set the Irish free at last. Filled with real characters on both sides of the conflict, Stars and Stripes in Peril is the new masterwork from one of our most provocative authors.

Terrific alternate history

This is one of the better books I have found this year. I am really sorry to find that the sequels have not yet been produced. A terrific alternate history of the Civil War in which the British jump into our family feud on the Southern side, it grabs your attention and holds on for the entire story. Normally I don;t buy book number one of any series until the entire series is available. This time I grabbed this one because it looked really interesting. British troops attack from Canada while the English navy tries for a close blockade. However, it looks like English plans will come to grief. Get this one and wait with me until they make books two through ? come along. You won't be sorry!

Good take on alternate U.S. history

I have read all three books, this book starts a little slow, but sets the stage for what follows. The 2nd and 3rd expanded the story really well at a better pace. I would recommend this series to anyone interested in alternate history or US civil war era.

Civil War Fanfiction

Stars & Stripes Forever is an alternate history novel who's point of divergence is mad. The Britsh Empire intervenes in the American Civil war on the side of the Confederacy, then is so incomptetent that they attack them instead of the Union. Aparently the largest and most powerful empire in the world has the collective IQ of a plastic cup filled with warm spit. Once the mental giants of the empire invade the south, the whole squad of Union and Confederate Avengers assembles and procedes to summon superweapons out of thin air to kick the crap out of a world spaning empire that aparently hasn't heard that technology made after 1812 exists.

the premise if the story is so silly that it becomes obvious the whole thing is an excuse to write bad USA x CSA fanfiction. I cant say I ever want to listen or read this book ever again, let alone the next book in the serries.

the naration is inoffensive though. So at least your ears won't bleed while you kill braincells.

One of the best.

I have read (listened to) many alternative histories. This is one of the best. It does bot go on forever. It does not depend on fantastic technology.
The only negative is that the other two parts are missing on Audible.

Excellent alternate history

I'm a Massachusetts history grad that's absolutely apathetic about the US civil war. That said, this book was riveting from start to finish. The character development was well done, the historical accuracy given the differences was carefully maintained, and the final confrontation had me choking back a cheer while I sat in a crowded coffee shop. My only real criticism is that the southern characters are voiced like elementary school caricatures and the British characters were voiced like the most over the top cartoons of British aristocracy possible. Entertaining but a bit pull-you-out-of-the-story-ish. Otherwise, absolutely phenomenal read. Heartily recommend it.

Quite Fun

An incredibly fun and harrowing tale of Alternative History that almost was non-fiction. Stars and Stripes Forever is definitely worth a listen or a read for any Alternative Historian.

An interesting twist

A fun listen, my only complaint is that the Union had a sudden tech rush near the end. I enjoyed the political rangling and negotiation between Jefferson and Lincoln over slavery as well as a means of ending the war. The American Civil War was a war between brothers. Seeing a third faction at play to bring the Americans back under one banner.

Great premise. Harry writing true to form.

Great premise. Harry writing true to form. The performance was good overall but his English accents at times made me smile.
