Publisher's summary

In her best-selling Amelia Peabody mysteries, author Elizabeth Peters has created an award-winning mixture of vivid archeological detail, finely-tuned suspense, and witty romance. This, the 12th Amelia Peabody mystery, opens in 1914. As the tides of war rise, Egypt is threatened by attacks. Espionage abounds, pulling in several members of the Peabody Emerson household even as they embark on a new archeological season. Amidst a growing tangle of disguises and deceptions, Emerson's nemesis, the Master Criminal, appears. As increasing perils threaten the Peabody Emersons, their expedition, and Egypt, help arrives from a most unlikely source. He Shall Thunder in the Sky is a treasure; absorbing, intriguing, and highly entertaining. And the surprising resolution is one that leaves even the unflappable Amelia thunderstruck.

Critic reviews

  • Romantic Times Award Winner - Best Historical Mystery, 2000

"Filled with intrigue and nail-biting suspense...rich with detail and realism...ripe with tension and peril." (The Washington Post Book World)
"Between Amelia Peabody and Indiana Jones, it's Amelia, in wit and daring, by a landslide." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Despite having produced 11 previous tales of Egyptological mystery and detection, Peters still writes a deeply satisfying story that combines elements of espionage, mystery, and romance. Some big surprises are in store for readers while Peters deftly ties her subplots together, but a few threads are left dangling enticingly at the end, leaving fans to expect another installment in this extraordinary series." (Publishers Weekly)

Finally, love wins out for those who truly deserve it. The series could've ended here.

Slipping Narration

Once again, Elizabeth Peters has written an entertaining tale of the Emerson clan. There's not much more to say about the book - if you've enjoyed the others, you'll enjoy this one. I've listened to all of the previous novels with the same narrator, but I have to say, I think she's slipping. There were several points in the recording where, if I hadn't already read the novel, I wouldn't have known if the speaker was Amelia or Nefret. Ms Rosenblat's earlier performances were spot on, so this was disappointing. It won't stop me from listening to the next one, but I hope this issue was just an aberration and future recordings will go back to the earlier high standards.

The book I’ve been waiting for in this series!

The previous book in the series, The Falcon at the Portal, starts something between characters that isn’t satisfyingly concluded until He Shall Thunder in the Sky. The Amelia Peabody series is best enjoyed in order. Some characters develop as they grow up and are given their own viewpoints

YAY!!!!

Best of the series (so far!)! The climax of the book (which felt like the climax of the entire saga) was so gratifying… swoon- This one was a banger, as the young folks say! Highly recommend..,👍😸

My favorite book in the Amelia Peabody series

If you could sum up He Shall Thunder in the Sky in three words, what would they be?

suspenseful, comfortable, resolutions

Who was your favorite character and why?

Amelia Peabody Emerson, what a character! She is a strong, quick witted, resourceful, unapologetic, female realist living in a time and place where men ruled the day.

Have you listened to any of Barbara Rosenblat’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Barbara Rosenblat is one of my favorite readers and she does a superb job, once again, reading "He Shall Thunder in the Sky". You always know which character is speaking and I am constantly amazed she can switch between men and women' parts, British and American accents, seamlessly.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Rosenblat create characters you are happy to spend the day/evening with and are anxious to visit again.

One of the best in the series!

Oscar-rated narration, a wonderful, emotion-filled story, terrific character development and a wowee ending. This book has it all and I think it's one of the best in the series. Don't start reading the series with this one - it needs some backstory.
