Publisher's summary

War hero Alistair Carsington really really loves women, and his romantic impulses have landed him in nearly as much danger as the Battle of Waterloo. To avoid his usual temptations and perhaps even repay the friend who saved his life, he's exiled himself to a place far from civilization - Derbyshire - in winter! Fate laughs at his good intentions and drives him straight into conflict with Miss Mirabel Oldridge, his match in tenacity, intelligence, and deviousness - who also happens to be wildly irresistible.

Mirabel Oldridge is already overwhelmed by her responsibilities, caring for her brilliant but eccentric father and the family lands, constantly on the verge of trouble. She does not need a devastatingly handsome, too smart, and empathetic aristocrat reminding her that she has a heart and a delectable body, so unfashionably clothed that he claims undressing her is a moral obligation. Now neither of them can resist temptation - how can something so wrong feel so very wonderful?

Wonderful!

Classic Loretta Chase humor, a flawed but honorable hero, and a proud, lively heroine. My favorite running joke: the hero cares a lot about what he wears, and even though he's attracted to the heroine, he's constantly appalled by her clothes. Cute role reversal.

Kate Reading brings all of the characters to life. She and Loretta Chase are truly a wonderful team.

Great book by a favorite author

What made the experience of listening to Miss Wonderful the most enjoyable?

It was refreshing to experience a heroine in a gothic romance that was well past the age when most women were married. She had sacrificed her first love to take over the operation of the family enterprises when he father failed to cope upon her mother's death. She was well grounded and capable. The hero was not the heir in his family. He was well known for making a fool of himself over women. In his remembrances of Waterloo, you experience the perceived glamor of war being stripped away.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mirabel wasn't afraid to take the reins in hand to achieve what she wanted.

What about Kate Reading’s performance did you like?

Kate Reading did an amazing job voicing the characters. She really helped them all come alive.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Unexpectedly finding love when hope seems to have passed

Wonderful "Miss Wonderful"

I am a new reader of Loretta Chase stories. I have thoroughly enjoyed three and can't wait to listen to more of them. Kate Reading is a perfect choice for narrator. Although I can tell it would be fun to follow each series in order, "Lord of Scoundrels" and "The Last Hellion" were great as stand-alone reads. I love the romances from Amanda Quick and Judy Garland. So happy to add Miss Chase to that list of favorites.

Not what I expected

I've listened to almost two hours of this book and I'm giving up. So far, it's about a younger son who happens to be a hero of Waterloo who is trying to give direction to his life and travels to a small town to drum up support for a canal. He meets a thirty-one year old spinster who, of course, is against the canal. The subject matter holds absolutely no interest for me and the author doesn't really give the reader any reason to like the characters. Boring plot, shallow characters and an adequate narration.

Book 2 much better

This book was OK but I’m glad I listen to book to first because I wouldn’t go on with the series if I had listen to this one. This one kind of dragged on and the female lead kind of annoyed me.

A strong 3.5 star book

I love Loretta Chase books. That being said, this isn't my favorite. But it's still good.

Mirabel is a great character. One of the things I enjoy about a Chase book is her strong lead female characters. This is no exception. I found the story a bit weaker than others. The romance was okay but it didn't quite grab me as previous books have.

The narration was excellent! This is a strong 3.5 star book.
