A best-selling author spins one of the most breathtaking stories of her career: a Gothic saga of lust, greed, and betrayal.

When beautiful, dirt-poor Ruth Yancey rises to become mistress of Sparta, Georgia's finest mansion, she reveals a heart of pure evil.

For three generations, she rules the mansion through cruel manipulation and insinuation, breaking hearts and shattering souls - until one courageous woman decides to match her madness.

None of these Fox women were worth it

I am torn with this book. Lovely performance. The characters including Rip were willing lambs to the slaughter. Ruth was horrible & evil. None of The Fox daughters were worth Rip Bowing constant sacrifices of her own family and men. Rip could have left. I am struggling with this mentality of pre Civil War slavery dedication to this family in 30s to I believe 70s or 80s. Rip didn’t even try to find her own child but transfers all her love to Ruth’s offspring so she can protect them. But she never protects any of them. Ruth does her worst and gets away with it for decades over and over while Rips watches. Ruth is this gigantic spider who weaves a web in the house and all over the town while Rips sits and watch her catch and destroy all those she claims to protect. Ruth is an evil character that needed a protagonist that was up for the job. Ruth was very well written but the other ones needed some backbone including Nell. I thought Yancy was going to be the one. So I am torn about whether it is a good book or not because I do not care for the protagonists.

Anne River Siddons' southern gothic masterpeice

What other book might you compare Fox's Earth to and why?

Barbara Kingslover's "The Poisenwood Bible". Both seem to be the most important book of their career.

Wonderful Read (listen)

I have always enjoyed Anne River Siddons books, Fox's Earth did not disappoint. I first thought I would not like the narration however I was wrong, Sally Darling did a terrific job building the drama and the Southern drawl in her redition of this novel. Thank you Audible and Thank you Anne River Siddons.

Dark but enjoyable

The story will make you cringe for the very evil of the main character. Still, a great novel well written and beautifully narrated

One of my favorite authors

Ruth Yancy Fox represents those people in one's life who try to steer your path in the direction that they think is best. Of course, her actions, for the most part, are larger than life, but certainly ring true. I wish more of Ms. Siddons books had been recorded unabridged. Her stories set in the South are perfect. Don't understand why this has not been corrected.

Intriguing!

Where does Fox's Earth rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is long, but definitely keeps your attention. The narration was good and kept you involved. I enjoyed listening!

Evil disguised as Beauty

Do not read this before listening to the book.

An anti-heroine dominates the story. Her misdeeds and outright cruelty dominate the 19 hours of the narrative. Almost any character that was likeable was destroyed, or needlessly suffered in her wake.
The view of Southern life, and the 75 years that the novel spanned were interesting but I personally prefer a character that I cheer for, not one where I am hoping at each turn for her demise.
The narration was excellent.
It was worth listening to this book, but I will never count it among my favorites.

WOW WOW WOW

Normally I just rate by stars. This book I purchased long ago. I wish I had read it then. All I can say is micro management/ / manipulation
It’s amazing. A must read. Couldn’t put it down
To much southern accent that I had a hard time differentiating the characters. Love to see this as a movie. 😀

Narrated litrature at its best

I first listened to this book 10 years ago and was excited to see audibles now caries it. ARSiddons is an amazing author in the same style as Pat Conroy and this is one of her best works. Not only is the Classic Southern Gothic writing style incredible, But it is also read by the only person who does work like this Justice, Mrs.Sally Darling makes the characters and the this wonderfully complex story come to life with her amazing narration.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED!

An excellent story! Enough drama to be interesting, enough romance (but not sappy), good character development. Cannot say enough good things about the author, and the narrator was superb! I have read most of Siddons books and enjoyed them immensely. Having this one read to me was outstanding! I always feel guilty when I get involved in reading a book that I can't put down. Having them on a Audible relieves that guilt, and makes boring, jobs and driving exciting. Thank you Audible, Anne Rivers Siddons, and Sally Darling!
