Khaled Hosseini does not disappoint!

I loved his other books and couldn't imagine how this one would live up to the others but it does. As with all his stories, it takes a bit to learn and be involved with the characters but by the mid point of the book you are fully involved and yearning for a happy ending for them all. As an added bonus I feel like it provides insight into the history of a culture-an added bonus that I appreciate. A must for any Hosseini fan.

All Alone

I guess I am the only reader/listener who was disappointed in this book. I was engrossed for the first 2/3 then not so much! I guess I am a romantic and while I realize real life is not easy, I want my novels to satisfy more than this one did.

Would you listen to And the Mountains Echoed again? Why?

I would listen to this again because it was a delightful story with many well defined characters to love and hate. Khaled weaves many characters and POV's in this diverse story line.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite characters were Pari and Abdullah brother and sister that were almost physically entwined with a strong sibling bond. My other favorite was the Uncle Nabee.

Which scene was your favorite?

Too many great scenes to pick from. The book keeps you engaged at all times.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It had some shocking secrets and events that make you cry and smile. Most of all the story keeps your interest to the very end.

A most excellent well written story

What did you like best about this story?

An excellent story...well written and uniquely narrated. It is like a "view into the soul" in a very unique way.

Not to be missed!

Where does And the Mountains Echoed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I could not put this audiobook down. Like other Housseini books, the complex characters stay with you long after the end. Agree with others that the author's narration was difficult on the ear, but the chapters narrated by Shohreh Aghdashloo more than made up for those. (I think I could listen to her read a dictionary and still be entertained).
Great book and I especially loved the way the intergenerational stories were linked together. Must listen.

Not my favorite of Hosseini's

I couldn't stop listening to The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns so I was eager to get started on this one. But I never really got pulled in by the story here. I like how we learn the outcomes of the initial story through different characters but it felt very disjointed to me. I was a little disappointed with this particular book, but think that Hosseini is a fantastic writer nonetheless.

Good, but not as strong as his 1st 2 books

Enjoyed this, but it wasn't as captivating as the Kite Runner or a Thousand Splendid Suns. I would still recommend it though.

brilliance again

I am a devoted fan of this author and pre-ordered this book. Hosseini can capture love and heartbreak and bittersweetness in a story like no one else. This dear story is about sibling love and loss. Beautifully accented voices do the narration, voices that make you listen a little closer, draw in, and feel what is being said in a nearly tactile way. The story is rich and layered and satisfying. Hosseini doesn't give the ending that you want, he gives the ending that you know in your bones is true to life. He has given us another masterful story.

Good, but not even close to Kite Runner

What did you love best about And the Mountains Echoed?

When I listened to Kite Runner, it blew me away. A Thousand Splendid Suns was a big disappointment, this book is better but not even close to Hosseini's first book. It's a very heart wrenching story of a family torn apart leading the listener to anticipate some kind of triumphant reunion or redemption to tie everything together, but it ends with a lot of loose ends. The story jumps from character to character as frequently as it jumps narrators. I agree with the other reviewers that switching of narrators is very distracting. I loved listening to the author's voice and accent. I was hoping that at least, they would take turns, but after the first chapter, the rest of the book is read by the other narrators with very thick, hard to understand accents. Perhaps the book might have made a better impression on me if I had read it instead of listening to it.

What other book might you compare And the Mountains Echoed to and why?

Kite Runner. It was written by the same author and is a much better story.
