In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The explanation for this shocking state of affairs is a rare genetic mutation - and a guilty secret - that have followed Callie's grandparents from the crumbling Ottoman Empire to Prohibition-era Detroit and beyond, outlasting the glory days of the Motor City, the race riots of 1967, and the family's second migration, into the foreign country known as suburbia. Thanks to the gene, Callie is part girl, part boy. And even though the gene's epic travels have ended, her own odyssey has only begun.

Spanning eight decades - and one unusually awkward adolescence - Jeffrey Eugenides' long-awaited second novel is a grand, original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire.

Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Audie Award for best unabridged fiction, Middlesex marks the fulfillment of a huge talent, named one of America's best young novelists by both Granta and The New Yorker

Excellent book. Of course, the reader is what makes it so good. Upon completion of this audio book, you will have received a lesson in Greek history, human physiology, and psychology. It is a little boring at the beginning, but when you get on the boat with yaya and papoo, you will start to experience one of the best audio rides you have ever taken. I've listened to about 100 audio books and this one ranks in my top 10!

Other people's skeleton closet

This was one of the very best books I have ever listened to (and I've read, heard a lot)! I was attracted to this book by the great reviews it got from its readers and its lenght, but the summary didn't sound that great to me. I was delighted that I bought it. It was over twenty hours long and I finished it in three days, only because I had things to do. The author created "real" characters complete with flaws and the narrator did a wonderful job. I came back to this web site to find out if it was fiction or a biography. It was so real. Buy this one! You won't be sorry.

Incredible

This is the fascinating story of a person who sees the world from the viewpoint of both genders without actually knowing why. The parallel story is the tale of a pair of young, naive Greek immigrant ancestors (told with loving grace by the narrator), and the fascinating juxtaposition of pioneer spirits. Download it in high quality format, as the voice volume modulation is not too good.

Biology, destiny and the riddle of the heart

This was an audiobook I will listen to again! The story was not what I expected - it was so much more! A family saga, the reader was amazing.

totally enjoyable

This book totally captured my attention. From the first sentence.."I was born twice" to the final "excited for what was to come" I was drawn into the world of the Stephanadese(?). Callie was so likable, you really cared. Even the somewhat taboo subject of incest was handled in a sensitive manner by making it understandable and the characters likable. The narrator was wonderful. The way he changed his voice for different characters and even had accents kept me waiting for the next chapter. I would recommend this book for anyone with a good attention span.

Hated to come to the end.
