Publisher's summary

I'm Ivy Lane, and if I never see another faerie again, it'll be too soon.

Twenty years after the faeries came and destroyed the world as we knew it, I use my specialist skills to keep rogue faeries in line and ensure humans and their magically gifted neighbors can coexist (relatively) peacefully.

Nobody knows those skills came from the darkest corner of Faerie itself.

When a human child disappears, replaced with a faerie changeling, I have to choose between taking the safe road or exposing my own history with the faeries to the seductively dangerous head of the Mage Lords. He's the exact kind of distraction I don't need, but it's work with him or lose my chance to save the victims. It'll take all my skills to catch the kidnappers and stop Faerie's dark denizens overrunning the city - but if the faerie lords find out about the magic I stole last time I went into their realm, running won't save me this time.

Promising Series

I really enjoyed this book! It was light, fun, easy to follow. The characters were likable and interesting. I was very captivated by the story and everything that was going on. It kept my interest through the Conclusion.

Ivy has secrets that she doesn't want getting out. Even her best friend Isabel doesn't know everything about her. A dangerous and attractive Mage Lord is getting too close for comfort. She tries to put him off but he leaves her no choice but to work with him to solve a disappearance case she is working on.

The narrator did a good job bringing the story to life. I'm looking forward to the next book. Talented writer & narrator!

PASS

I gave up. Call me picky but when I listen to an audiobook the narration is almost more important then the book.

3.5 Stars

The plot was o.k but there was very little character development or world building. It would be a great book if a little more time was put in to exploring the different charaters, their history and how and why the world is the way it is. Also, given the first person perspective, I felt their wasn't enough interaction between the characters for me to really get to know them and feel invested in any of them. Overall I felt like there was lots of action happening but not a lot depth to the motivations behind it. I wouldn't use a credit on it but it wasn't bad as a $1.99 added narration with Kindle.

Not for me

This story might have potential but I couldn't get in to it. It just didn't appeal to me.

Felt Dragged, Kept Going, Worth it in the End!

I researched this series and found it very interesting, and also decided with how many were written there was something worth it all, so I impulsively bought the first 3 books right out the bat, knowing how fast I go through them I wanted to be ready to just go, go, go.

Listened to the first book and really didn't want to finish, it felt too long and drawn out. I kept losing interest, But since I already bought the first 3 books I pushed myself to Keep going and I'm happy I did. It got really good near the end. So after I finished, I started book 2 and that one caught my interest right of the bat.

So give it a shot and hang in there because it is worth it in the end!

I will say the second book is much much better.

Who doesn't love a girl with a sword?

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com.

I really like the narrator. She uses a light english accent and portrays an independent young woman very well. Some of her other characters that stood out included the rude Lord Ivanter in ch8 and the old woman in ch 11.

Warning that there is some cussing from ivy (f word in ch 11 when she's frustrated, f word ch 14 yelling at fire imps, a few more). I would have preferred the story without it, but it fits the character when she's emotional.

Story wise, I thought it was interesting when Ivy makes the transition from referring to the man from Lord Cultan to Vance to show a closer emotional bond. I thought it was done a little early though. (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a prime example when it's done well, from calling him Junior to Indiana at the end). I think Ivy was too stubborn, taking her independence too far. I think some of the writing could have been a little smoother, but otherwise I enjoyed reading the story.

I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this first book. it has great potential but I do like more information about the world I'm trying to escape to. the narrator was well spoken and but her voice has a child like sound to it. she still did a great job though.

Gets better as you go on

Liked the storyline although did drag on a little in places. Characters were good to get to know.
Disliked the language (swearing) within the book as is quite a lot, too much for my tastes.
I will sample book 2 before buying but would consider listening on through the series.
Book started slow but soon warmed up.

Narrator is appalling, story not much better

I finished it at 2x speed because I can't bear to leave a book unfinished, but the narration nearly pushed me to. I listen to a lot of books and can be confident in saying this is the worst narrator I have ever heard, straight from the Dick van Dyke school of terrible British accents. Inexcusable with so many amazing narrators available from so many different nations. The story doesn't help, it plays to a lot of the worst tropes of this genre and is pretty shallow. I won't be listening to the rest of the series.

Faery Blood

I enjoyed this book. The narrator is very good but she made a few mistakes, which most American narrators do. The pronunciations aren't always correct. For example 'shone ' is pronounced as 'shon' in this country another one is 'thourgh' she pronounced it as 'thuro' and there are a few other's. But that's just nitpicking. It can get annoying though.

Great book just a pity about the reader

love the book and looked forward to the audiobook. It is a pity that the reader can't pronounce the English language properly.
Other than that a perfect way for me to do 2 of my hobbies at the same time.

A brilliant urban fantasy to start a series

I love urban fantasy and this ticks all of my boxes.
The world was well formed and explained, believable and perfect for the story. The magic system, though a little confusing at first and not completely fleshed out yet I don't think, was well formed with a clear hierarchy as well as different strengths and weaknesses that prevented any one race/faction from being overpowered to the point of obscenity.
Ivy Lane was tough as nails and beautifully brusque, and her ability to admit to her flaws and second guess herself was a breath of fresh air in comparison to some of the lead characters of the books I've been reading lately. Mage Lord Vance Colton was proud, bossy and stubborn initially - to the point of being annoying I might add - but as the story progressed and his character was properly revealed I came to really like him (even if he was a little terrifying at times).
I would have liked to have seen and learnt more about Drake and Isabel, but given this is the start of a series I'm hopeful I'll get my wish in later books.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to getting sucked back in with the next in the series in the not too distant future.

Odd accent

I don’t usually do a review but the narrator was v odd. I was distracted from the story trying to work out what accent the reader was going for. Posh cockney I think. Anyway not sure about getting the next book. Story promising
