Story
For women today, achieving a successful career, a fulfilling romantic relationship, and a rewarding personal life can feel like opposing goals, leaving their deepest yearnings just beyond reach. It has even become difficult to enjoy the simplest pleasures of our lives. We are stuck in “go mode", damaging our romantic relationships, pleasure, and creativity. But what if there were a way to experience the simplest pleasures of our lives on a deeper level, freeing the body and psyche from these damaging patterns?

Story
We don't think too much about sex; we're merely thinking about it in the wrong way. So asserts Alain de Botton in this rigorous and supremely honest book designed to help us navigate the intimate and exciting—yet often confusing and difficult—experience that is sex. Few of us tend to feel we're entirely normal when it comes to sex, and what we're supposed to be feeling rarely matches up with the reality. This book argues that twenty-first-century sex is ultimately fated to be a balancing act between love and desire, and adventure and commitment.

Popular podcaster and personal finance expert Lindsay Goldwert has traveled across the United States to meet the stars of the subculture. In this audiobook, you will learn that nearly everything that you've been led to believe about female sexuality isn't actually true. And that, despite what you might think, it is possible to simultaneously feel little to no spontaneous desire and have a happy and mutually satisfying sex life long term. Exploring the mismatch between ideas about sex in our society and what the science tells us, Mind the Gap also explains how this disconnect lies at the root of many of our sexual problems.

Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Nuanced, Smart, and Compassionate

Publisher's summary
Sex is the silent cornerstone of human civilization. It is what leads to all things - life, pleasure, even hate and rage. It is that one topic that, no matter how modern we have become, is still considered taboo, and yet at the same time it is also the one topic that we need to know most about.
First used as a term in the late 1960s, BDSM has become prevalent in daily pop culture. Madonna's "Express Yourself" video from 1989 depicts her in leather outfits, crawling on all fours toward a saucer of milk. Other snippets of that video include a leash and collar and riding crops. The punks of the late '70s wore bondage belts to complement their spiked hair. Bettie Page shocked her 1950s audiences with her riding crop and rope restraints. And now the sexual concept of master and slave finds its way to movie theaters.
It's no wonder that curiosity about the lifestyle is present. It's tantalizing, it's bold, it's passionate, but it's also real. And with that reality comes the details that the movies leave out. It's important to educate yourself on the lifestyle before engaging with the path and finding your first sexual partner. Or maybe you just want to know if spanking is for you.
In club nights in Hollywood, where female dominatrixes stalk the barroom floors and chains can be heard rattling against the brick walls, or in shop displays in Berlin, where mannequins sport bit-gags and latex saddles, or in the Seattle punk scene, where girlfriends are sometimes carried around on leashes, BDSM is not just vibrant in the bedroom.
The aim of this book is to help you take your first steps into BDSM. It will explore what BDSM is, the various roles attached to it, how to choose a partner, which role is best for you, how to practice BDSM safely, and how to avoid the common pitfalls for most people just getting into it.
I hope this book helps to open your eyes to new possibilities and how you can enjoy the marvelously mischievous world of BDSM.

Good basic intro
I'm no newbie to BDSM, I was mostly curious about the info in this book. This is a great book for anyone who is new to or just curious about BDSM. It's really pretty basic and just lays down the groundwork, but it's a great intro.
The narrator did a good job and was pleasant to listen to.

OK
Narration, Kathryn LaPlante, ok
Not entirely sure this book is titled appropriately. It's more of a beginner course into what BDSM is, not necessarily how to get into it - although there are a couple small sections that do cover some of the ways to find others in the lifestyle. It's very basic and lists a great many of the ways and tools that a couple may play with, giving explanations and safety measures on some and nothing more than listing others.
Pretty broad topic to be covered in such a short little piece. I think if you were completely new to the lifestyle and wanted information, this may give you just enough information to be dangerous. If you have an awareness, it really won't necessarily add anything to your information bank.
It was ok

this was a good book for newbies to BDSM. I do wish it went into more detail, and gave more ideas on what to do when you start actually playing to get people rolling in the right direction. other then that, it has some useful information inside

great intro
Perfect for those interested in getting started, wondering if they are 'normal', or who just want to understand concepts/terminology. If you're already into it & want real instruction, this is too basic for you. I'm planning to use it to introduce my partner, who is a bit too nervous to even discuss it verbally right now & isn't clear on what he does/doesn't like. I think this will work just fine.

Another interesting book!
Most intro into BDSM books are about the same...which they should be! Each one has a little different take but the same message. It doesn't hurt to listen to each book with an open mind. And if you can take away just one different thought from each, then it was worth listening to. That was how it was for me. Plus, after awhile, when you hear the same things over and over, it will sink in. Maybe one person worded the same thought differently, it might turn on that light bulb in your head. This was definitely worth a listen!!
