Publisher's summary

Marooned on Cumberland Island National Seashore off the coast of Georgia, Anna finds time weighing heavily as she waits out a 21-day assignment on fire detail. When the sudden plane crash in the inland palmetto thickets calls her and the other members of the fire crew to action, the flames are quickly extinguished. But suspicions smolder over the cause of the accident which killed both the pilot and his passenger, Cumberland's lone law enforcement ranger.

The tightly-knit island society begins to seethe with hushed accusations. As tensions escalate, Anna and crew find themselves pressed service. Though the "experts" are called in to evaluate the crash, Anna can't let the investigation rest solely in their hands. Her inquiry causes her to stumble into shady dealings that question the integrity - and honor - of her own crew. Cumberland Island has no fences or alarm systems to guard its cherished goods, only the eyes and ears of a handful of determined rangers. But will protecting the island come at a price even Anna is unwilling to pay?

Critic reviews

"As usual, Barr is best at creating believable scenes of action in a setting that is beautifully detailed but never romanticized." (Amazon.com review)

It may be a good story but....................

I was excited to see another in book in the Anna Pigeon series. I purchased the book last week and began listening to it. The narration of this new Nevada Barr Anna Pigeon book was so bad that I may not ever listen to it. The narrator, Cindy Williams, was reading in a monotone. I may have to resort to reading this one. I have listened to and enjoyed enjoyed all of previous books read by Barbara Rosenbladt very much. I don't think this is just needing to get use to a change.

Disapointing adbridgment

Any additional comments?

This abridgment is very choppy. It's difficult to track of the characters or follow the flow of action. It's like watching an abridgment of

Don't Ever Waste Time on Abridged Nevada Barr

Anyone who writes as well as Nevada Barr should never be abridged into an audiobook. I'm still not really sure what happened. It was a confusing and boring read...all the fabulous Nevada Barr descriptions were cut. I hated it.

Lackluster uninspired reading

There is no performance here just a lackluster and uninspired reading. Unfortunate butchery of a good story

The reader makes the difference

We love all of Nevada Barr's Anna Pigeon series books, as do we love the voice of Barbara Rosenblat. Barbara makes the story come to life. Unfortunately this book is not read by Barbara instead the reader flies through the story as if it were a list of names in a telephone book.

In all probability Cindy is a fine audio book reader however in this particular case it is all but impossible to listen to. This was a very sad performance and resulted in my wife and I turning it off after 15 minutes.

badly abridged

I just finished listening to and reviewing this and Ill Wind, and this is almost a cut & paste of that review. This was just a little better because I could follow the plot. I enjoyed to look at Cumberland Island National Seashore very much and would have enjoyed it more as a full length book.

I admit to disliking abridged books in general (with a few notable exceptions and a couple of books that I wished had been abridge, but that's what a good editor should do before the book is published). Considering that Barr's books generally run around 10 hours, cutting it down to under three was foolish, but there was a fairly clear path from mystery to solution with only a few breaks that were completely "huh, what happened". Because it's been so long and this hasn't been made available as unabridged, I suppose you might as well get it, but only if, like me, you want to taste all of Pigeon's backstory as you read or re-read the series.

Bring back Barb Rosenblat

Good story, went quickly. Reader can't compare to Barbara Rosenblat who has narrated most of them.

Narrator?

Is this the same Cindy Williams whoin played Shirley? She sounded like she was trying to rush back to TV. This gets my vote as the most unbearable narration. Cindy is to storytelling as Sandra Bernhart is to acting. Bad!

Enjoyable read!

Enjoyable and compelling as the other Anna Pidgeon novels. Set on Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia. Didn't have as many details about the beauty of the place as other Nevada Barr novels, but still made me want to visit there. Recommended!

this is abridged

I would have preferred unabridged. I gave 3 stars for performance because she reads the story too fast for me.
