Publisher's summary

Bear witness to the ghosts and dark gods of Motor City, revealed by the light of a fiery cityscape. It’s the night before Halloween and Detroit is burning in a celebration of arson and vandalism.

Devil’s Night is a unique collection of interconnected urban horror stories taking you back to October 30th, 1987. Drawing inspiration from Michigan legends such as the Nain Rouge and the Hobo Pig Lady, Lawson weaves a rich and haunting tapestry of terror and tragedy. Inside these chapters, you will find cursed vinyl records, inner-city druids, diabolical priests, and slim slivers of hope. Devil’s Night burns with Curtis M. Lawson’s signature brand of supernatural dread. This is smart psychological horror, ablaze with visceral imagery, with equal measures of heart and heartache.

Grim & Grimy

This was a wildly entertaining collection. Rooted deep in Detroit’s own phenomena of mythology and incredibly dedicated to the atmosphere of Devil’s Night. It reminds me of. An 80s John Carpenter flick mixed with weird fiction that highlights social decline, relatable characters, and terror.

Excellent collection of horror short stories

Collection of short horror stories taking place on Devil's Night in Detroit (day before Halloween). I was not familiar with the tradition or other local legends and enjoyed how the tales included small references to make the stories feel connected.

The narration is excellent as well.

No one escapes the pig lady.

A creepy Halloween, actually Halloween eve, bundle of horror. Interconnected very dark and violent stories in Detroit. They call it Devil's night. I have never experienced such horror, but love to read about it. These stories are very descriptive and read by a very talented narrator. She really brings these stories to life. Bedtime reading/listening to guarantee nightmares. Pick this one up for your fall reading.
I was gifted an Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin.

Does for Detroit what King did for Maine

I had no idea Detroit had so much folklore attached to its troubled history and present, and these horror stories show is that monsters may exist, but they have to sneak into this world through cracks and seams we open. Lawson builds a whole world by only showing us enough - every story is gruesome, original, and relentless, but they add up to this bleak, detached panorama with roars and screams audible. Everyone’s monster story is different, but on Devil’s Night, we’re all together in being screwed.

Narrator Raquel Beattie is talented and has a great voice, but was IMO miscast here. Most of the main characters are poor, haunted tough guys, often doing terrible things just to survive literally or emotionally, while Beattie sounds very poised, smooth, and femme - you know, the audiobook voice. I’d listen to her again in a hurry but here I thought it added a level of distance and thus an additional viewpoint on the characters, when the book’s non-judgmental flatness about these “bad” people was key to its success.

StoryOrigin provided me with a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for this honest review.

DEFINITELY A KEEPER!

DEVIL'S NIGHT BY CURTIS M LAWSON AND NARRATED BY RAQUEL BEATTIE definitely hits a 10 on my weird book meter! Devils night is set in Detroit, the night before Halloween,of course. Each story in the collection is connected to every other story. If you are into the weird, Devil's night is for you. Lawson brings creepy to a whole new level with his audiobook and Raquel Beattie does an excellent job in the narration. So turn off the lights, and turn up the volume and get scared by DEVIL'S NIGHT !
