Publisher's summary

Deputy Coroner Mattie Winston is starting to feel like she's in way over her head...

As the single mom of an energetic toddler and an investigator working for the medical examiner's office in small-town Sorenson, Wisconsin, Mattie is used to her life being a juggling act. But now that she's moved in with Detective Steve Hurley and his teenaged daughter Emily, and has started planning their wedding, her home life is looking more like a three-ring circus. And with her boss and friend, Izzy, suddenly having a health crisis, she could not be more grateful for the newest staff member in the ME's office, Hal Dawson.

All too quickly her gratitude turns to shock when a floating body found trapped against a dam turns out to be Hal, but the cause of death isn't drowning - his throat's been slashed. Hal was supposed to be fishing on his day off with his girlfriend. And when their empty boat is found in a nearby lake, the whereabouts of the woman becomes an even more urgent question.

To find out what really happened to her coworker, Mattie may need to rock the boat. But a killer is just as determined to keep the truth from ever surfacing, even if that means making Mattie the next one to go under.

Might just be the best in the series

Annelise Ryan has crafted another great installment in the Mattie Winston series. The storyline had plenty of twists to keep you wanting more. Jorjeana Marie gave a great performance bringing it all to life.

Not quite as good as the rest of the series

I enjoyed this installment although I didn't enjoy it as much as I have previous installments. It will interesting to see what happens next.

Riveting realistic story, but very detailed murder and morgue descriptions

I confess, this Audible book was riveting and had some wonderful subplots
There were many times I found some of the descriptions difficult to hear.
The characters made up for it.

Rivoting

Always on the edge of my seat with Annelise Ryan. Yet Mrs Maisel funny like Bones in the romance department. It has it all...

Working Stiff thru Stiff Competition

THEN Dead in the Water
Followed by 3 more.

Dead Calm
Dead Winter

& finally

Just started Dead Calm.

Love Mysteries,

Especially that there is nothing off color just clean listening

Amazing

This series has always been one of my top favourites and I'm always recommending it to anyone who love a good murder mystery. I've read all the book multiple times, and it still leave me laughing on every page.

This has been my first time listening to an Annelise Ryan book on Audible, and I'm very impressed.

I can't wait to get my hardcover and read it again!

Refreshingly real day to day.

A clear reflexión of what police work is (I hope) like. Refreshing in its day to day real life conflicts.

What an entertaining series!

I love good mysteries, some are so convoluted I lose track and then regain it later in the story.
Annalise Ryan writes a very interesting story, with some twists and turns but I always feel solidly anchored within the mystery. Mattie is just as caring, loving, gentle and goofy as always but she's gaining the confidence she's has always wanted. Hurley is mellowing out a bit , add Emily and Matthew and the four of them are becoming the loving family all three have wanted. Emily is growing into a lovely young woman and Matthew is more than a handful but very sweet. Their entire extended family and friends are present. Unfortunately, some will come to an untimely end.
It sort of ends on a cliffhanger but not so much to upset anyone. It's worth the credit and ultimately when it comes to an end, you will smile.
As always the Ryan/Marie combination is a fruitful one.
Oh, Hurley's new "pet name" for Mattie will make you laugh and chuckle every time he says it.
