Publisher's summary

The new thrilling novel from Megan Miranda, the instant New York Times bestselling author of All the Missing Girls, The Last to Vanish, and The Only Survivors.

When Hazel Sharp, daughter of Mirror Lake’s longtime local detective, unexpectedly inherits her childhood home, she’s warily drawn back to the town—and people—she left behind almost a decade earlier. But Hazel’s not the only relic of the past to return: a drought has descended on the region, and as the water level in the lake drops, long-hidden secrets begin to emerge…including evidence that may help finally explain the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.

Not her best, but definitely would recommend!

Let me first say that I had to get over the shock of not having Rebekka Ross as a narrator! I quickly became accustom to Inés del Castillo, and she ended up being just as good of a fit for MM writing style, with those short clipped sentences that create not just a mysterious story, but an intriguing atmosphere.

I have read ALL of Megan Miranda’s books since 2016 and this might be the first one I gave less than 5 stars. I was totally engaged for the first two thirds, love her writing style and this storyline, but I guessed who the murderer was way before the wrap up, which never happens with MM books. Unfortunately, she just kept adding one more layer of family drama to throw the listener off from who the most likely killer was, all of which muddled instead of furthering the plot.

The end was rushed, like the last third too quickly wrapped up, it easily could have been longer. The mystery ended up being less complex, with too many uninteresting twists. There was some explaining needed at the end instead of her usual style of dropping clues subtly throughout. I appreciate again that MM gave some credibility to the protagonist as a sleuth, but I would like to see a little more support for at least one of the secondary characters (Nico?) instead of just the mundane what Hazel was thinking and piecing together in her head.

This would be a perfect teen read…some suspense, relatable conversations and characters (I’m 60 and I loved it) no blood and gore, no irresponsible drug, alcohol use or sex, no sex scenes at all. Some positive messages, with the characters all young adults in the work world and setting a model for overcoming some past choices, and choosing productive career paths.

Worth the wait!

I have read all Megan Miranda’s books and love the plot twists making the read an exciting roller coaster ride of emotions. This story kept me guessing and the final turn was worth it. I read it in 3 days!

Amazing story narration could have been better

I miss Rebekkah Ross narrating Megan Miranda’s books. Her tone was the icing on the cake to me. The book is set in the south and while it’s not a fake southern accent (thank God) the narrator is a little to polished especially on words with TT in them (gotten) and it just threw me off from the storyline.

The story was great and twisty and kept me guessing till the end. My fav will always be all the missing girls, but this one may be my next fav (or a perfect stranger then this). I love how Megan Miranda truly captures complex family dynamics, the way things look different when we see them as adults versus kids, and of course, she is a master at creating well developed, strong and dynamic characters.

Selfishly looking forward to her next story already 🥰

Another Great One

I’ve loved every book and this one is no exception. Normally, you can start to figure out who the bad guy is. But I literally could not narrow it down to one or maybe two suspects. I really didn’t see the bad guy coming. Or even even the details in which they rationalized with they did.

Great story & narration

The story was great. It wasn’t as much of a thriller as some of her stories, but the mystery was wonderful as always. The narrator did a good job of giving enough without giving too much to distracting voices. Very balanced. I enjoyed it!

Good

Definitely worth a read, but not one of my all time favorites. A little tricky to follow at times, but overall an enjoyable read

A great mystery . You'll be dumbfounded by who the killer is.

loved this story, although books written in the first voice are not favorites, usually. Do not miss this thriller!
