Publisher's summary

The first book of D Day Through German Eyes has fascinated listeners around the world with its insight into the German experience of June 6, 1944. Now, book 2 contains a completely different set of astonishing German testimonies from the same archive.

These newly translated eyewitness statements by German veterans show the defenders to be determined but psychologically insecure, often deluded in their thinking, and all too human in their shock at the onslaught they faced. These unique interviews with German soldiers are a historical treasure trove of new insights, heart-stopping combat stories, and glimpses of wartime psychology that will absorb anyone with an interest in WW2.

Eye opening and very well done..clear and concise and I was taken back to all of the films that I have seen of that battle throughout the years. Made me think of how one sided they were.

Nothing like it

The bill is probably unique. And the reader may well be, too. Recommended highly. It will long stay with you.

Excellent

The random details contribute to the believability of these interviews. I was struck by the way these guys focused on a narrow purpose for what they were fighting for. The higher up their view, the more complex and nuanced. However, with the perspective of looking back, they always conclude with their duty and personal innocence. I think that is how most soldiers are with the exception of the criminals

Interesting and informative

This book expanded my understanding of the events around D-Day. In particular, the composition and quality of the static troops and the attitude of some of the local French population.

much new information about D Day

Very interesting to hear the variety of views of the soldiers. The last chapter was very interesting. The weapon mentioned there if used 5 minutes sooner would at least have delayed the end of the war.

Great Book

Only book I’ve found that sounds believable from the German side. Really interesting to hear what these men did and experienced during D-Day. I liked how most of them don’t come off as Nazis but rather just unlucky regular German army fellows. Book 1 is even better.

Interesting Perspectives

This is more jarring than the first book but still insanely interesting and thought provoking. For those that keep bringing up the fate of the Soviet troops, get a grip on reality. If an invader declares a war of annihilation on your country and then you defect, you should be hanged, drawn, and quartered like the disgraceful traitor you are.

Excellent!

I’ve read many books about D-Day, Operation Neptune, and overlord, and I must say that this German point of you is an excellent read. I highly recommend it.
