Publisher's Summary

Do you ever wonder why spirits take the actions they do? What if there was a system of rules they had to follow?

Clive Logan is a serial killer; or, to be more accurate, Clive Logan was a serial killer. Caught after a record-breaking streak of murders, he was executed by lethal injection by the state, while thousands of his victims' grieving family members watched.

That should’ve been the end of his emotionless and unfeeling existence - but it wasn’t.

Sent to Hell - where he enjoyed himself entirely too much - he was singled out to become a Spirit Core, an invisible spiritual entity that eventually ended up back on Earth. At first unfamiliar to him, his new incarnation slowly revealed itself to have its own set of rules, following something not unlike the video games he used to program back when he was alive. At its root, he was tasked with invoking fear upon his new victims - but there was just one problem.

Having never felt any emotions before, he had no idea what that meant. Contains LitRPG/GameLit elements such as level progression and statistics. Warning: The main character is a successful serial killer. If you enjoy paranormal movies such as Paranormal Activity and wonder how the ghosts and spirits operate, this book is for you!

Interesting take on an haunted house!

This story depicts paranormal events well in terms of an emerging haunting and it delves into how effective these supernatural powers can be on the human psyche. It was hard to get involved with the protagonist but the story telling and environment development was well done.

Not your usual Dungeon Core book.

I really liked this new take on the litrpg genre. The story was well written and the voice work was top notch. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Scary and fresh take on the Dungeon Core genre!!

I am a big horror fan. I love horror movies and books…all things scary and gory. I have been hyped for this audiobook for a while and now it arrived at Halloween. This book is written by King of the Dungeoncore Jonathan brooks…yes, another Jonathan Brooks story and yes this is another amazing Jonathan brooks story. Damn, I gave away that I liked the book.
Somehow Brooks is able to take the dungeon core genre and put a fresh take on several of his books…dungeon world, crafting dungeon and core of fear. This dungeon core is different from any you have read and that is a very good thing. You follow Clive, a terrible serial killer that feels no pain and goes to hell, they kick him out and make him a spirit core. His goal is to terrorize this poor married couple in hopes to garner enough fear to appease the queen of the underworld. This is basically a haunted house/ghost simulator and it is one hell of a good time.

The book is very stat heavy and the skills Clive receives are interesting to see him implement. He can put cold spots in a room, he can flash redeyes, he can slam drawers, create a shadow figure in the corner, etc… This book is freaking brilliant. Don’t worry about gore, there isn’t much here, but some of the content may unnerve some of your happy go, lucky readers. That’s ok, the main character is a serial killer and they are supposed to be unnerving.

This is the second book I have listened to from Sarah Colton. The other being Dungeon Player, I felt she did an average job in that book. In this book, she steps up her game and does a really great job. I think she may have improved her sound equipment as well. The production sounded much better.

All and all this audiobook thrilled me and I was highly entertained by it. We need more horror litrpgs dammit.
This book gets a 9.0 out of 10

Something New

This book is twisted in the most amazing way. From the Prolog to the epilogue, it kept me invested and and torn on if I should be rooting for the MC. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a great take on Dungeon Core stories.

Great, clever dungeon core

I’m not a huge dungeon core fan, but I love gamelit, and I love horror. So I jumped at the chance to listen and review this. It’s a great, solid story. But most importantly, it’s clever. We don’t get clever nearly as much as I’d like in these stories.

It almost reads like a deconstruction of a Paranormal Activity movie. As in, why does the poltergeist slowly ramp up the scare stuff if it can pull off all that stuff it does at the end? It fits well in this scenario.

This is my first book by Sarah Colton also. She is an excellent, well-rounded narrator. Hopefully she does more gamelit or horror titles in the future.

The only terrifying part are the stats

This audiobook is slightly less scary than your average episode of Scooby Doo. If you are looking for something scary, this isn’t it.
The long litany of scare stats at the end chapters are incredibly frustrating and nonsensical. 200xAFC+2DMx34YMCA+127LOLS=WTF.
Only bloody mindedness got me through this mediocre “something” core story.

Great book but less scary than I thought

If your into thrillers, you have to give this one a try! It took me a little while to get realy into it, but it's well written and narrated. Therefor I will still give this one 5 stars. The story was a bit mild for me but that's personal preference.

Deconstructing fears

Although the story is a shallow retelling of paranormal activity with a MC that cant carry a series. It combines the litrpg and mystery elements well to provide a reasonable background for the paranormal movies.

Personally I found no enjoyment from the movies or this audiobook as there is nothing new or inventive from mg perspective that I havent seen from other books but I am leaving it a four star rating considering that bias.

The Mc just has no personality or drive with the reaolution being more killing. He just chases the next high which sometimes interferes with his actions anyways. Its like watching a wolf among sheep.
