Publisher's summary

Deep in the African rain forest, near the legendary ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of eight American geologists are mysteriously and brutally killed in a matter of minutes.

Ten thousand miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, watches a gruesome video transmission of the aftermath: a camp destroyed, tents crushed and torn, equipment scattered in the mud alongside dead bodies - all motionless except for one moving image - a grainy, dark, man-shaped blur.

In San Francisco, primatologist Peter Elliot works with Amy, a gorilla with an extraordinary vocabulary of 620 "signs," the most ever learned by a primate, and she likes to finger paint. But recently her behavior has been erratic and her drawings match, with stunning accuracy, the brittle pages of a Portuguese print dating back to 1642…a drawing of an ancient lost city. A new expedition - along with Amy - is sent into the Congo, where they enter a secret world, and the only way out may be through a horrifying death.....

Congo was adapted to the screen and directed by Frank Marshall.

kind of slow

thisnis my first Chricton story. I don't think I'll listen to more. the story was ok. interesting concept, but not well executed. often times bogged down by detail and research that may be true or complete BS. I wasn't interested enough to fact check.

Great Story, lackluster narration.

I’ve only listened to/read three of Crichton’s books and I have yet to find a story from him that I don’t love but this one, while still a great book, is held back by a lacking narrator. All the male voices sound the same, so much so that I almost always lose track of who is talking unless Whelan outright says so. Other than that, amazing book.

Good story but tough to hear

I’ve never heard a narrator imitate voices quite like this. Hearing a woman try to speak in a male voice with an African accent is so unrealistic and laugh worthy it pulls one right out of the story every time she does it.

Lots of technical Info

Congo was a great book. I really enjoyed the level of detail he went into when describing the scientific as well as history of things, you can tell a lot of research went into this book.

Solid

While the material is dated it is still enjoyable. if you like Crichton, you'll love this. I noticed a few ideas from this book were stolen for Jurassic World.

Full of stereotypes and tropes.

It's fine for someone who really likes Chriton, but it's not his best work, it feels very dated in its depiction of Africa. Great narration.

Loved It!!!

I loved this. Despite the terrible reviews, the movie is one of my favorites! But the book is even better! So much detail I couldn’t believe it. I completely fall into a different world when I listen to this book. I listened to it over and over.
