Editorial Reviews

Anne Hathaway is nothing short of masterful in her narration of Baum’s beloved classic. As she guides listeners through the world of munchkins, winkies, and quadlings; witches; and the humbug Oz, Hathaway’s impressive vocal repertoire shines. As narrator, she is lithe yet precise; her voice sounds lilting or emphatic, as the story details require. In character, she is spectacular. Each character is filled with personality - a light-voiced Witch of the North; a brusque soldier at Oz’s palace; a monotone, robot-like Oz; and a usually cheerful and genuine Dorothy. The variety enriches the listening experience. Yes, one may know the story well, but Hathaway makes this recording a definitive one.

Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Nominee, Solo Narration - Female, 2013

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming one of this year’s most anticipated films, The Dark Knight Rises, lends her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto as they get swept away into the magical land of Oz , where they encounter characters and places you may remember from the movie – and several more that never made it to the big screen – on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City.

“It’s such a wonderful book and I was so happy to be a part of bringing it to life”, Ms. Hathaway said. “There are a lot of great voices in it. The more fun you have with it, the sillier and the more free you get with it, the better it is because it’s a story that can handle it. It’s amazing to be able to discover something new about something you feel you know so well.”

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is part of Audible’s A-List Collection, featuring the world’s most celebrated actors narrating distinguished works of literature that each star had a hand in selecting. For more great books performed by Hollywood’s finest, click here.

Enjoyable story and performance

I had never read this story but of course had seen the movies based on the book. I enjoyed the book much more than the movies because it was more innocent if that makes sense. The Wizard of Oz scared me as a child and I never really wanted to show it to my children. The book however is charming. I know there are supposed to be hidden agendas in the book but I don't care about any of that. The narrator did a good job in portraying different characters and making the story come to life. I'm glad this title was available so cheaply for only $0.99. I listened to it all on the first day and now will listen again with my children.

Worst. Narrator. Ever.

It was very difficult to appreciate the wonderful tale, as it was originally written, due to the ingratiating voice of Anne Hathaway. I listen to many audiobooks during my long commute. With most of the books that are narrated by celebrities I am able to get lost in the storyline. Those books feel natural. Each character is imbued in a particular manner which makes him or her easily believed. This is not one of those books. The characters within sound like Anne Hathaway being... Anne Hathaway. As the book continued, the accent, voice and tone assigned to each individual character progressively became more annoying and eventually just downright ridiculous. Towards the end the voices sounded like 1980's "valley girl" audio caricatures. At no point should a book written at the turn of the century have that accent. Actually no book should contain that accent (unless it is an audiobook about "valley girls").

I gutted it out until the end for the sheer sake of learning the original ending. In retrospect, I wish I had aborted my mission and bought a version narrated by someone else. Anyone else.

In Technicolor.

An enjoyable children's story that is a timeless story. I actually enjoyed this story better than anticipated. I liked how the books beginning seemed to be in black and white just like how the moving is. I really liked the TV series the Tin Man that was based on this book. Anne Hathaway is a very good narrator, although some of her interpretations of how certain characters will sound do not fit. Thanks Audible for the freebie.
