Publisher's Summary

Set yourself up for life as early as possible and enjoy life on your terms!

Are you tied to a nine-to-five workweek? Do you work hard making someone else rich? Are you financially free - the sort of free that ensures you spend the best part of your day and week, and the best years of your life, doing what you want? Would you like to retire from wage-paying work within 10 years? Why not build and follow a plan that allows you to live the life of your dreams?

This isn't about saving up a nest egg. It's not about setting aside money for a "rainy day" or just accumulating an emergency fund. It's about building out a Financial Runway. It's about creating enough readily accessible wealth that you can survive without work for a year. Then five years. Then for life. Set for Life is a three-step guide that gives listeners the fiscal confidence they need to achieve early financial freedom. Listeners will learn how to:

  • Save more income - 50+ percent of it, while still having fun
  • Double or triple your income in three to five years
  • Secure "real" assets and avoid "false" ones that destroy wealth

Here's to fiscal confidence, here's to giving up a nine-to-five job, and here's to being set for life!

Excellent content read with enthusiasm

This book is not only information, but motivating too.

A few things I loved:

-house hacking. Buying a house and renting out rooms is a fantastic way to build wealth.

-comparing spending time to beat the stock market to selling bottles of water outside of a stadium is a great analogy.

-the case for DIYing. You don't need to outsource everything to an expert. You save money and learn.

-fancy degrees earn you more money partially because they lock you into working.

-the cost of commuting. I love that he brings up Mr. Money Moustache's article. I just wish he would have used MMM's best case scenario $.17/mile figure, where the math for commuting still stinks.

Set for American life

This book is mainly geared for the average American office worker with little or no understanding of personal finance. However the book have some main good points and will set the foundation for anybody interested in improve its personal finances. The best key points I like from the book are: focus on lower your mayor fixed expenses (housing), clean up any bad debt before you start to invest or acquire any good debt. Understand what your goals are. Review your net worth regularly. Understand how you are spending your time and how that will impact your finances in the long term. Understand how leverage can accelerate you to faster reach financial freedom. I think the best advice from the book is about the false idea / trap of stock picking as a way to reach financial freedom which I think many investor experience over a lifetime. The bad thing with the book is that it is heavy geared towards American people/context and based on the authors own experience and circumstances. Example of a strange advice given in the book: "if you cannot house hack the move to another city where you can". Should both me and my wife quit our jobs, move to another country/city just so that we can house hack ? just becomes house hacking was working for the author does not mean it will work for all.

A Must-Read Financial Playbook

This is probably the most useful financial strategy book I've read and I've read many. While it does address many similar concepts covered in other Financial books, its real value is in the introduction of concepts that actually contradict conventional wisdom in some ways. It contains very real strategies that can be implemented by anyone.

While I'm probably a bit older than the target demographic of this book I found many practical strategies that i have already begun to Implement. To the younger person reading this book it could very well transform their life in a significant manner if they choose to implement these strategies. Probably the most significant strategy for me personally was in the concept of the financial runway. We have traditionally been taught to pile money into retirement savings, yet that can leave us cash-strapped when it comes to acquiring assets early in life that can produce and replace income for us later on. I can recall countless opportunities I was unable to act upon because I could not tap into funds tucked away into retirement accounts. Fortunately I was still able to acquire some good income producing assets but the untapped potential was very real and would clearly have been life changing.

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book and read it immediately. It's read by the author and he makes it easy for both the financially astute and novice to understand and begin implementing.
