Publisher's Summary

"In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I've often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I'm letting my guard down." (Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened)

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In this audiobook she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells listeners what it took to get back on her feet - the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath - both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

    "Underwhelming"

It is difficult to review this book without reflecting on the current political climate in which it exists. However, I will do my best. I am somewhat ambivalent toward Hillary Clinton. This stems from my expectations of this book, and its very real shortcomings. Even for someone who supported her during election, it is difficult to hear some passages without rolling my eyes. Most notably, when Clinton describes her relationships with friends and family, her lifelong achievements, and her policy positions for the betterment of the country, it comes off as.... too perfect. It is akin to asking someone in a job interview what their greatest weakness is, and they respond with "I often work too hard." Therefore, if you're looking for candid admissions of real flaws and hardships, you won't find them in this book.

There are a few other things that this book does not contain. Unlike some reviewers have mentioned, it does not contain blame shifting. Clinton does take full responsibility for her failure to win. She takes responsibility for having that "damn email" server, for being wary of the press, for not being able to connect with rural voters, for her "coal jobs" gaffe.

This book also does not contain any hints to her future endeavors, and yet reads eerily like we may be seeing more of Hillary Clinton. Especially in her remark that "Putin has not had the last laugh yet." While this is not an issue for me, I leave it for others to decide whether this is a good thing or not.

This book does contain a thorough description of Clinton's days after the election, her thoughts on the Russian investigation, many references to Trump (none all too flattering), a brief history of her public service, her viewpoints on some big issues our country faces today, and anecdotes from her mother's life. It also contains a few swear words, which gave me a brief chuckle in hearing Clinton read them.

Overall, this book probably won't change your mind on Clinton, and it isn't really supposed to. I think it is worth a read (or a listen).

    "Beautifully Complete and Balanced"

I wasn't a Hillary fan before this. I respected her position and her education but had too many lingering questions about her career. Reading this book, I entered into it with an open mind and taking it from not Hillary Clinton the personality but just HC a fellow human being. What can I say? In this book she educated this political newbie about Washington, how things work and how she deals with it along with her family life. The book is a good balance between political life and personal/family life. This gal is a survivor. You get a really good sideline view of what happened before during and after this crazy time in her life. Be prepared to experience every emotion, she covers them all as well as getting a kick in the rear for your sense of national pride. Even though the experience is scary, it inspires you to get up and get involved. Excellent job Mrs. Clinton. You gained a fan and fellow patriot.

"Found myself not caring and not listening at times"

The audio book is just short of 17 hrs long. Hillary read it aloud about as deadpan and without emotion as one could read any mundane obscure medical journal. It’s her story for Christ’s sake let’s hear some different inflections to accentuate points or situations. And there are constantly annoying “quote” and “unquote” to the point that it gets distracting and takes away from the story. I get it, she wants it clear that it’s exactly what is said, word for word. But her precise inflection and enunciation sounds more like a talk to text dictation than her telling her own story. The devils bargain was way better put together, riveting, and read. I voted for her but the audio book is just a mess and not worth 17 hrs.

What happened? I will tell you... you are so clueless to what is happening. We are divided because of the last eight years. We remembered the 8 years of the clinton White House, your years in the senate. I just find your voice annoying- like a mosquito in the ear buzzing and buzzing Your excuses, your whine, and your jabs at the current President. Your inability to understand that you were the problem. You lie, cheat, and steal. Barf

"Hillary lets it all hang out"

As one reviewer wrote. Hillary wrote this book because she had to. She wrote it to expunge her demons. This is a long and personal book. Like Hillary, at times it is enthralling, at others maddening and maudlin. But overall it is a must read, Hillary presents the 2016 election as it was, A smart, sensitive, honest woman who had devoted her life to the service of her country against a boorish, narcissistic ignorant self absorbed boor who did not pay his taxes, maligned and abused woman and never spent a second of his life in service to his country. And what happened, He won! Unfortunately, Hillary takes this personally. And tries to explain How it happened, She talks about everything but the elephant in the room. Just as the Germans got the perfect representative for the German spirit in Hitler, The Americans got the perfect embodiment of their soul in Trump. The point she misses or chooses not to acknowledge is the mean spiritedness and unbelievable ignorance of the American people and their institutions (press). She ignores the fact that the majority of Americans sit around and watch Jerry Springer, Fox news, Judge Judy and Dr.Oz as the centerpiece of their lives. In other words the one thing that Donald Trump got right, and she didn't is the deplorable nature of this country ( where people massacre each other with guns and rifles on a regular basis.) The thing Hillary got right is that there is no way in this Universe Donald Trump could fix anything. But he will pronounce it wonderful. All the stuff about Comey and the Russians happened but were unimportant compared with the distortions of the press and stupidity of the American people' Also, a major player in the outcome of the election was ignored. Mr. Obama's passivity was a major turn off. He could easily have quaffed Comey, but he chose not to do so. he could have exposed the Russian interference in the election, but sat on his hands. His passivity played a greater role than either Comey or the Russians. Oh well, It is all in the past. But I do think Hillary did a major service to the country by writing this book. The best thing that could have happened to Hillary is that she lose and spend time with her family, The worst thing that has ever happened to this country is for Donald Trump to be elected president.

    "Important Rendition of Recent History"

Hillary Clinton is a gifted orator but more important she articulates in very plain language, and with citation, the facts and experience of being a public servant. Then she further extrapolates what it is like to be a public servant with the benefit of experience over decades, and as a woman, being challenged with more adversity because of the deep rooted sexism and even misogyny that is alive and well in America. I deeply admire Secretary Clinton for processing through her exhaustion and grief and rising to serve the country she loves once again. First by giving her full account of what indeed happened without the hindrance of media discretion, sound bites, and Russian interference and continuing to use her expertise and influence to further liberty, justice, and freedom for all.

    "Amazing! Brilliant!"

This is a well written, contemplative reflection not only of the presidential campaign of 2016, it is also a well thought out reflection of her cumulative life experience. In warm and often poetic prose she exposes us to some of her most personal feelings and ideas. Secretary Clinton, the philosopher politician. A must read for anyone who cares about our nation.

"Fascinating Glimpse Into the 2016 Election"

I listened intently as Hillary told her story, in her words and on her terms. I don't understand the negative reviews - she takes full responsibility and is thorough in her analysis of what went wrong. She has a deep understanding of policymaking and the legislative process and it shines through in the book. Perhaps her greatest weakness is that she's too thoughtful to appeal to those who are moved by slogans and chants.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a wonderful piece of writing, high quality memoir and history. HRC's performance is great -- wonderful to have her voice telling her story. As for the content... well, it is very distressing to re-live the loss and see what leadership the world could have had. But I found spending time with her company very nourishing, and I felt stronger afterwards and ready to try and make a difference to world. Not on a Hillary scale, obviously, but just in my small world.

    "A good listen"

Naturally this book won't be for everyone, but as a Canadian observer of US politics, I found Clinton's book to be intriguing, and very insightful. In particular, her observations on what women face in political life - and indeed in all aspects of life - were frank, trenchant and fair-minded. Those who voted against her, whether in the primaries or in the general election, will doubtless find much to mock or critique, but I think her story is interesting and worth listening to.

    "Terrifying"

A brilliant insight into the Clinton campaign and the 2016 US presidential elections.
Recognising that this is a one-sided account, some of the information about Russian hacking, the inability of the media to be unbiased and the obsession with Clintons emails put a new spin of horror into the result of the election and a strong warning for the future of US and western democracy!
Even if you are not a Hillary fan (I wasn't), even if you're a Bernie or die supporter, even if you're someone who has always voted republican, this is a must read/listen/share!

A riveting and vital read if you care to understand the many things that contributed to the 2016 US election result. As ever, Hillary expertly explains the many factors that coloured the campaign - never shying away from the nuance that is necessary to expose the full picture.

"Not what it purports to be"

It is awful that she lost but this book spends far too much not discussing why and then primarily discussing external factors, not internal. There is a whole chapter on Chelsea Clinton which makes no sense in the context of this book unless she is being positioned to run for something. Hillary says she takes the blame for faults in her campaign but they are barely described. I don't think you will be much wider having read this: it is another example of Hillary not opening up and being real. for example she says her campaign team was amazing: everywhere. how can that be reconciled with such poor results in key states. if not intending to be fulsome, it may have made sense to wait a little until she could be.

Fascinating perspective on the issues that were important to Hillary during the election and her life experiences that shaped those views. Hearing her read her own stories makes it real and I find her very authentic. Her views on her family, motherhood, grand motherhood, her husband, women’s rights, gun laws etc. resonate with my own opinions. I have a new found admiration for her, whatever her critics say.

Despite the hoping that H would not blame Trump for the short comings in her election it was evidently going to happen but surprisingly not as frequent as expected. A fair and balanced range of opinions and quotes summarised the race of the decade. I now feel I know why she did not win. She lacks a sense of force which is a shame when trying to focus attention. This saying I did not want H to act in accordance with Trump but give an authority to show she could control how a story developed, such as the stupid email scandal. The best candidate did not win in my opinion. Narrated well and enjoyable. Showing a broad and in depth journey of the election. Very much appreciated the more intricate details that could not have been worked out, i.e. Not quotes, could have been seen on tv. Such as what she ate, her recollections with meeting people and her inner voice, making it all the more honest and personal!

"An honest and insightful look at what happened"

Hillary Clinton gives her side of the story, obviously, if you want another side, read someone else's. Im a big Fan already, and was so shocked when the election was lost, this book, brilliantly narrated by Hillary herself, is a comprehensive look at the campaign from her side of the fence. She is very honest about her mistakes and her feelings and not once does she ask us to 'feel sorry' for her.
I highly recommend this book. As a non- US national it has left me ith further questions about the role Comey played in the election and as a global citizen it has given me huge worries about the interference and hacking by Russia not only to the US but also other nations, like the UK.
