What the Critics Say

"Quite simply the funniest book you'll read all year...easily as funny, as self-deprecating and as wordly-wise as The Moon's a Balloon by David Niven...it's like Tom and Jerry written by a Cockney Roddy Doyle on Prozac. But funnier." (GQ Online on Going Off Alarming)

"Rattles along at the same delightful and dizzying pace as its predecessor.... Baker loves a tale told at his own expense and they come thick and fast. He writes like he speaks, with hyperactive garrulity and a rhetorical flourish...there is something about Baker in full flow that is affirming." (Daily Telegraph on Going Off Alarming)

    "Love it"

There is a very different feel to this third book as it covers the death of the author's much loved dad and his own battle with cancer. There are still lots of hilarious anecdotes but the passing of Spud is dealt with with great tenderness while his description of his cancer treatment pulls no punches. I have enjoyed all three books in this series, perhaps because he describes so well a world I also grew up in. As he says he remembers everything but I seem to have forgotten so much so it is great to be reminded of a different time.

    "Perfect"

Ah Danny, I love you mate. Of the 3 volumes this is perhaps the saddest but Danny comes through it in such a down to earth way that you feel churlish for breaking down in tears. I love you Danny.

    "Just wonderful"

Danny Baker is, wonderful. He tells a tale like no one else ever can. His use of language is terrifically entertaining. His enthusiasm for the story is contagious. I loved all three books in equal measure, they are all terrific.

    "Brilliant"

Superb, a book that must be the best third autobiography ever written. The brilliant way Baker intermittently weaves comedy into the depressing period of cancer & the effects of its treatment makes this a belting book. He is hubristic and not a bit ashamed of it - and there is not one sentence of false modesty in here - but the boundless optimism is refreshing, and a wonderful tonic for a cynical world. Buy this book - it is better, so much better, than the alternatives.
