Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable, audiobook edition of #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, read by Sarah Jes Austell. The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn't fashion. It was a stolen book. At age 17 she was a dumpster-diving, shoplifting anarchist. By 29 she was the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, a $100 million-plus fashion empire.

Filled with brazen wake-up calls ("You are not a special snowflake"), frank observations ("Failure is your invention"), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal's meteoric rise, #Girlboss is more than just Amoruso's story; it is a book for anyone seeking a unique path to success - even when that path is winding as all hell and lined with naysayers.

Did not finish

This is a boastful book, full of gratuitous swear words (seriously, it's unnecessary and not cool).

Boasting about shoplifting. Boasting about several menial jobs. Good for you, Sophia. It's just not my cup of tea. The fact that the narrator sounded like a teenager didn't help.

And while I'm getting things off my chest, I find referring to women as girls deeply patronizing.

Love it! It's fun but it goes to the point. She really makes me think in what I need to be a #GirlBoss.

Men should read it too!!

My fiancée read this and she said it related to me so well, so I read it and I was really impressed by it. I think guys could learn a lot from this and is a fresh perspective compared to normal business books.

Great read!! Thanks

As a young adult, I loved it

The whole message in the book is something I think all the young 20-something women of the world should know about. Sophia's story is a real inspiration and it does make you feel like anything is possible. Her journey to being who she is today is so simple, practical - she did regular everyday stuff. The narrator's voice is also fitting considering the title of the book. loved every second of it. will definitely be listening again.

Rather patronising and SO American

There was something about Amoruso's ideas and lessons that were patronising and humble bragging. It's very peppy and grey to get yourself pumped up in lots of ways, but I also thinks she took it a little too far sometimes.

The narration, however, was superb.

Irritating Montone Narration

What disappointed you about #Girlboss?

I'm sure your a nice person but I couldn't continue listening to the monotone American twang aimed at a 20something audience passed chapter 8 and requested a refund. Sorry. The life/business journey was the draw to this audio, the energy in the narration wasn't there for me. The timeline jumped and other synopsis from people involved with Nasty Girl (name of Girlboss company) were dropped in without a clear flow and I was left thinking "what have I just missed"? I spent time jumping the audio back to relisten and relisten to comprehend, rather than reaffirm, and still not getting it I just gave up and went to the Netflix adaptation which is 100 times better.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

That I am that Girlboss just older...much older!! The parallels of my journey to discovering and selling vintage are, I am sure, the standard blue print experience for all Girlbosses around the world who have an "oh my God I've sold it for how much" moment! Who then rush around to find the next big ticket item and have visions of becoming a dominating online seller! Life's obstacles inevitably stop this from happening quickly so this story will resonate with lots of people out their on the 'rag to riches' journey. To those starting up and who haven't already done their own market research, if you can withstand the monotone voice, this audio may well be of great, great benefit to you, just not me.

Would you be willing to try another one of Sarah Jes Austell’s performances?

No

What character would you cut from #Girlboss?

The main character, as I say, is me, in another form but older, and into house music, rather than heavy metal!

Any additional comments?

Stopping this audio and going straight to the Netflix adaption, I found myself watching episode after episode without being annoyed and irritated. The story of one persons "ah ha" moment and the struggles that follows to do what they are happy doing, rather than what society thinks they should be doing, makes this a compelling, motivational and inspirational watch, but not listen! Sorry. Hope you continue to be extremely successful with your business.

The Must-Read for any entrepreneur with heart.

I'm a weirdo. I'm also an entrepreneur who works her butt off despite people pestering me constantly with; 'when are you gonna get a real job.' Which is why this book was SO revolutionary to me. Sophia's journey from broke-ass freegan hunting for vintage to the CEO of a million dollar company is inspiring, impressive & amazingly down-to-earth. This book reads like your best friend giving you invaluable advice & encouragement, whilst making you laugh & recognising that you're a 21 century girl with WIFI so you're not an idiot. Conclusion; you need this book in your life! 💡

Perfect for entrepreneurial women

I loved this book so much! Despite the negative reviews it gave several good advice. I listened and read the book at the same time and this was far the best book I have ever read in this category. It was better than Sheryl Sandberg's Lean in.

Love the sass level

Not my usual genre but I actually really enjoyed this. Which if I'm honest surprised me a little.

I'm not a girly girl on any level so really appreciated the attitude of just being yourself, even if it doesn't please others.

I loved the sass level and inner thoughts which mirrored some of my own inner dialogues. I think you just need to appreciate it for what it is, someone opening up about their self and their history and being brutally honest.

I really liked the narrator too as she gave it justice. Shame the author didn't narrate it as I feel that would have made it seem more personnel.

Overall a nice surprise listen for me.

Disappointing

Sophia Amoruso is so inspiring and has such an amazing story to tell, and yet this book is boring as hell. Her tips to get an interview or succeed at work are so obvious it feels like she's considering her readers totally brainless. Too bad!

A book to remember

I related so much to this book and I'll defiantly always remember it and no doubt always re-listen to it. I'm a 16 year old girl and I don't read books, but as my first book (wish my mum brought me) I absolutely loved it!!!

Sometimes interesting & sometimes typical

Overall, I think it was a good and easy listen. The voice acting was great as it felt like a friend was just sharing her life stories. However, the content was often predictable with a plethora of sometimes trying-hard quotables. However, I do suggest this for young girls in their uni years, trying to navigate through the business world.

For girls, not women

Where does #Girlboss rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'm not a fan of leaving negative reviews, but it wasn't the best business book. It was reccomended on a business podcast, but I think its target market should really be for teenage girls. The message is good, being that you don't have to have been successful in your past to be successful in your future, however 95% of the book recounted her teenage life and the things she got up to instead of providing sound and constructive information. But in saying all that, I think her intentions are good.
