Publisher's Summary

Kim Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a tidy apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. You would never guess that Kim grew up behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house, navigating between teetering stacks of aging newspapers, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room - the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding. In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home, her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends, and the emotional burden that ultimately led to an attempt to take her own life. And in beautiful prose, Miller sheds light on her complicated yet loving relationship with her parents that has thrived in spite of the odds.

Coming Clean is a story about recognizing where we come from and the relationships that define us - and about finding peace in the homes we make for ourselves.

    "Someone else's therapy"

I'm sorry I have to write a negative review, since it is clear that writing this book was important to Ms. Miller, but frankly, her life just wasn't that interesting. Or maybe it was, but you can only say so much about hoarding and very few details were provided about some of the possibly more interesting things that were going on in her family - these were just hinted at or referred to in passing. As a "coming of age" story, it was pretty mundane.

It doesn't hold even a pale candle to Glass Castle - use your credit or money for that instead

Honest, open, and enlightening. Story and narration are excellent. Her voice is calming and perfect for the story.

The fact that the author narrates her own story makes it better. It is cringe worthy at times and you keep hoping things will get better! Good listen

    "Morbidly Fascinating"

It was a fascinating story, and like your father, I am truly sorry that it was yours - or any other child's. The book doesn't offer any answers but it does provide a candid look into what it's like on the inside, into the powerful love that still exists within the word: family.

Loved this. So interesting! It's short but covers a lot of territory. I liked the author reading her story, though I had to speed it up a little. I recommend, very insightful.

This book will encourage all readers to throw out those old papers. I do wish she had included some information on addressing this issue.

    "Heartwarming and heartbreaking."

I can relate to parts of this book. My parents were not hoarders, but my childhood home and family were embarrassing which caused me to isolate myself. The story is powerful and raw.

Passionate tale of family love despite circumstances. Really enjoyed the fact that the author read the book. It authenticated the story.

    "Memoir of Living with Hoarders"

This is a memoir about living with parents who are hoarders and the impact that had on the author's life. This book is between a 2.75 - 3.00 star rating for me. It was a quick read, and was about the right length; I think if it were much longer, I would have lost interest.

I enjoyed the parts of the book that focused on the hoarding of her parents, the conditions of her house, and the various ways it impacted her life. I never watched the show Hoarders, so much of this was new to me. I have a general concept of what hoarding is, but this brought to life the conditions and impacts on others.

I think that this is an example of an audio book that should not have been narrated by the author. It would have been easier to listen to with a different narrator. Additionally, there needed to be additional editing. One of the things that puzzled me was her discussion of not being able to return to college for financial reasons and the impact it had on the rest of her summer, to the point of attempted suicide. All of a sudden, she was talking about being back at her school and graduating. The whole part of the transition between despair over not being able to return to school and then just happily returning was missing. At first, I thought I just missed it, so I listened again and didn't hear it. I also think that some areas could have been shortened/eliminated and some could have been explored in more detail. I think with a different narrator and editing, this would have been a better listen; I would recommend the print version to eliminate at least one of the issues.

    "Superb Author, an Amazing Story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love this book and will listen or read again. It's a wonderful story, has incredible perspective, I was there through the whole book. She exposes the true vulnerability of life, and love with a hint of humor. A precious story...

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kimberly Rea, but each character is special,

Which character – as performed by Kimberly Rae Miller – was your favorite?

Kimberly Rae Miller is also easy to listen to. I didn't realize the author was reading the story, she's so great I checked because to had find out who was taking me away!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I was listening as I hung wallpaper, I hardly knew I was there and was happy to listen as long as possible.

    Any additional comments?

I can't wait to listen to something else she's done. Awesome all the way around!
