Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall, written and read by Spike Milligan.

At Victoria station the R.T.O. gave me a travel warrant, a white feather and a picture of Hitler marked 'This is your enemy'. I searched every compartment, but he wasn't on the train....

In this, the first of Spike Milligan's uproarious recollections of life in the army, our hero takes us from the outbreak of war in 1939 ('it must have been something we said') through his attempts to avoid enlistment ('time for my appendicitis, I thought') and his gunner training in Bexhill ('there was one drawback. No ammunition') to the landing at Algiers in 1943 ('I closed my eyes and faced the sun. I fell down a hatchway').

Filled with bathos, pathos and gales of ribald laughter, this is a barely sane helping of military goonery and superlative Milliganese.

Beautiful Spike

How wonderful to have one of Spikes best known books read by himself. It can't get better than that. He wrote in a conversational style - his style, so to have him read it is a good match. He is my favourite nut of all, bar none.

You just don't get better

I won these books as part of my school leavers achievement award - everybody asked for record tokens - back in 1984 and to hear these wise-cracking books read by their incredible author is just bliss, hearing him crack up at his own jokes is a delight and reminds me how much richer we were with a Spike around, brilliant.

Gorgeous

What made the experience of listening to Adolf Hitler the most enjoyable?

Spike's performance reading his own memoirs is fabulous.

What did you like best about this story?

The personal aspects are truly touching and the zany humour is always close to the surface.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was very easy to listen to this in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

The value for money of these books is not good. There are 7 books in the series. each rated at "1 credit". This book is less than 3.5 hours long, which makes it one of the most expensive books I have bought on Audible. I have bought single books longer than all 7 volumes. These should have been bundled.

Brilliant!

Love the way Spike cracks up at his own reminiscences. Seeing as you're cracking up at the same time it feels like you're sharing the joke between you.

It's war but not as we know it!

I've read the book, but actually listening to Spike brought it to life.
There was only one Spike Milligan and this book gives you a great insight into his early life as a soldier. Full of Milligan wit, it also shows us his solemn side.
Vivid memories come to life leaving you with a mental picture of his every move.
How the hell did we win the war!

Praise from a lifelong Goons fan

I was brought up with the Goons and am addicted to their humour. This audio book is just great.

Comedy Genius

When I was a child my grandfather, who also served in the war, used to read from these books and he'd often have to stop as tears of laughter rolled down his face. Mixed, I always suspected, with tears of sadness. Spike doesn't pull his punches here. War is brutal. It's scary. But most of all it's utterly absurd.

Authors should not read their own books

Would you try another book written by Spike Milligan or narrated by Spike Milligan?

No - there are several more in this series, but I won't be buying them

What was one of the most memorable moments of Adolf Hitler?

What were memorable moments in the book as read were not memorable in the recitation ... very little really caught my attention, except the annoyance.

How could the performance have been better?

Authors should not read their own books; Milligan's presentation was marred by too much 'Goonism'; sniggering before a funny story - telegraphing that it was a funny story. Breathless recitation of anecdote as he tried to suppress his own laughter at stories which were funnier to him than me as audience.

Was Adolf Hitler worth the listening time?

Not really, I persevered because i had no internet access to download another book

Any additional comments?

I know from experience with others that I find authors reading their own work a distraction from the work; I had hoped for better; I was disappointed.
