Publisher's summary

The Woke are killing comedy—and that makes being a comedian today better than ever!

The Woke—that humorless, joyless, shame-inducing virus—are killing comedy…and that is great for comedians! So argues award-winning comedian Lou Perez in his hilarious and provocative book debut, That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore.

Through the lens of comedy, Lou examines anti-racism, sex, gender, cancel culture, and all the modern-day sacred cows that have been propped up in recent years. An equal-opportunity offender, nothing is safe from his mockery. Lou punches up, he punches down—he’s throwing haymakers in every direction!

This book is a cancellable offense—but worth the risk. It’s time to fight back: to create, to celebrate, and, most importantly, to laugh. These are amazing times, in no small part thanks to the Woke gift to comedy.

Plus, listening to That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore will take care of your diversity quota. Lou has the results from his DNA test to prove it.

A hilarious & insightful book on wokeness & comedy

Lou provides hilarious and very insightful book detailing almost every crazy woke story/controversy since about 2015, expertly rips the rampant hypocrisy to shreds, in a very funny and satirical way. It's a great book to read or recommend to anyone to understand why wokeness is so crazy, obnoxious and counterproductive. It also serves as a memoir of a comedian/legendary sketch writer/performer's career, experiences, ups and downs, and the wisdom he's gathered along the way. it's a very entertaining, funny and insightful book, not to be skipped.

Audio version is better

Its great to hear a comical voice of reason in this crazy woke world. Great book to read. But, the audio version is better because its narrated by a real LatinX.

Amusing and Educational

While it might seem controversial to some, Lou manages to maintain humor while explaining his experience as a comedian, and giving insights on what one not willing to conform to "modern audiences" might have to expect.

The way he lays out the current issues in comedy (and really, all entertainment) is insightful, grounded, and, most importantly, funny.

Not Funny

I grew up with the comedy of Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Jack Benny and others. Later to be updated with Bill Cosby, Richard Prior, George Carlin, Ricky Gervais, and Jim Gaffigan. As you can tell, each of them have different styles and range of topics. The one thing they all possessed was the ability to make audiences laugh, not just at the subject matter, but often, at themselves.

Picking up this Audible entry, I was expecting a piece on how comedy has changed over the years. What I found instead, was primarily a political piece critiquing the industry for its fear of the changes in our political climate. There was nothing about the book that came close to being funny, just more commentary on the sad state of our culture.

Toward the end of the book, the author/narrator revealed his voting status over the years and his current moniker as a “libertarian”. My take is Mr. Perez comes across more as a disillusioned progressive Democrat than a true libertarian. As a conservative thinker. I find fault with both sides of the aisle. Perez's narration struck me as insincere as he reverted to the typical name calling for those on the right like myself who do not buy into the left wing dogma. I always find it amusing when those on the left revert to name calling and demeaning conservative thinkers who disagree with their point of view. Mr. Perez would like to cloak those comments into satire, but I did not buy it.

Bottom line, this book was not what I expected and not a recommended title from yours truly.
