Publisher's summary

On the continent of Tiandi, humans lived amongst beasts, demons, and spirits.

Here, warriors were as common as the clouds in the sky, and each expert could either cultivate their inner energy known as Qi, or their soul, to form Spiritual Energy.

In the village of Jinwei, Luo Xiao grew up like a beautiful bird locked in a cage. He was weak from birth and unable to leave his bed for an extended period of time, yet his beauty made him well-liked amongst the villagers.

One day disaster struck the village of Jinwei. A Corpse Puppet appeared wanting to eradicate all life. A seal was unlocked, and soon the Corpse Puppet was dead under the hand of the sickly Luo Xiao. But this was not the end of his misfortune.

Right when he thought that the end was coming, a man as handsome as a god descended to the mundane world and took him away. For the sake of revenge, Luo Xiao sold his soul to this handsome man, but is it only his soul that this alluring stranger took from him?

This is a BL novel that focuses on a romance between two men.

This is Great Book

I really in joyed this book. The narrator did a great job sucking u into the story. The characters were interesting to following throw out the whole story. The adventures the two main characters were the most interesting to follow. I can't wait for the second book to come out.

From fear to trust to Love

At first I felt I could not follow, but the story was amazing. And I love how kind yet assertive Xiao is.
The story reminds me of Beauty and the Beast but oh so very different.

But I also like how the author has Xiao come to understand some of the feelings he discovers as he travels and how though weak he refused to let others push him around.

BL Cultivation novel

I like the story but I think it has some underdeveloped aspects. The protagonist motivation for revenge ( attachment to his village) is kind of superficial, while it's stated that he loved them you don't get the feeling of lost ofter their deaths. I like the two characters. BL approved.

BRO..

Ok ok ok, before you hate I LOVED this story it was very interesting and cute but.. DUDE?! The writing style is absolute torture, it’s so BAD I could barely get through the first chapter it’s terrible!!!! Old man, child, like a chicken pecking seeds, etc all of these are SUPER overused and there’s no world building at ALL like bro I get it their pretty but what does it place look like?? Have the time they’re just talking about how pretty they are!!!!!! Again great story I just HATE the writing style 😭😭

Dark Stockholm syndrome BL

First, there is a lot of disturbing actions one of the characters commits constantly. While the other character, who is captive, looks the other way and accepts what sickens him(literally vomiting all the time); this fits in a dark romance genre.

World building was neglected and hard to understand at times. The characters didn’t have compelling reasons for their actions; no/hidden background for the older character, and the younger one was left basically as a blank slate.

The storyline, characters pining after each other with repetitive scenarios in every single city they passed through, little to no personal development. I can’t recommend this, it was so boring and hard to get through.

Why so creepy and non-consensual?

This book has a very creepy and overwhelming grooming vibe. Honestly I didn't mind the storyline itself so much. What really bothered me was that he main character it's only 15 years old and his love interest is like thousands of years old and clearly an adult.

There is a lot of coercion in their relationship as far as the romance goes. I wouldn't even really call it romance because it's more like grooming. The main character continually expresses his discomfort with the things that he forces him to do like kissing, sitting in his lap, and performing public displays of affection.

I did find the world interesting and I wish that they're focused more on world building and character building instead of this creepy forced romance. I was hoping that there would be like a time skip or something like that so that we could see the main character age up a bit and possibly become a bit more mature but that never happened.

Call me old fashioned but I like it when both halves of a romance are willing participants.

What I will say as a positive is that Ewan Chung did an amazing job narrating. His performance was excellent.

Okay but juvenile

The writing of this novel is quite juvenile overall. The writing is repetitive and often goes around in circles, seemingly going nowhere. Jiang Yao(?) isn't very likeable, and while I understand that the main character is supposed to have a frail constitution it gets frustrating how reliant he always is, not to mention constantly reminding the reader that he's only 15, totally inexperienced with love and relationships, and this millenia old demon is courting him. I think this story has a lot of potential which is why I wouldn't rate it any lower, but I also think it could have used a fresh point of view to counter some of the overuse of language and certain descriptions, and that it would have made the story flow a lot better. I'll give book two a chance, but I can't say this is on my read again list.

Disappointed...

Let me just say I love Tinalynge's work. Condemning the Heavens, Blue Phoenix and Escaping the fates are all in my favorites category, but this one I listen to for 4 and a half hours and I had to uninstall it. Way to much of a love story and not enough of Tinalynge beautiful works with cultivation and battles. Overall rating this book a 4 out of 5 out of respect to Tinalynge. 5 out 5 to performance for Ewan Chung (you work with what you got). 2 out of 5 for the Story because the beginning was good and I can't give it a 1 out of 5 because I didn't listen to it all.
