Publisher's summary

An instant New York Time bestseller!

Carry On meets Arthurian legend in this subversive, “delightfully original and whimsical” (Kirkus Reviews) young adult fantasy about what happens after the chosen one wins the kingdom and has to get married to keep it…and to stay alive.

Arek hadn’t thought much about what would happen after he completed the prophecy that said he was destined to save the Kingdom of Ere from its evil ruler. So now that he’s finally managed to (somewhat clumsily) behead the evil king (turns out magical swords yanked from bogs don’t come pre-sharpened), he and his rag-tag group of quest companions are at a bit of a loss for what to do next.

As a temporary safeguard, Arek’s best friend and mage, Matt, convinces him to assume the throne until the true heir can be rescued from her tower. Except that she’s dead. Now Arek is stuck as king, a role that comes with a magical catch: choose a spouse by your eighteenth birthday, or wither away into nothing.

With his eighteenth birthday only three months away, and only Matt in on the secret, Arek embarks on a desperate bid to find a spouse to save his life—starting with his quest companions. But his attempts at wooing his friends go painfully and hilariously wrong…until he discovers that love might have been in front of him all along.

Wanting more

This is a fantastic cozy fantasy of a group of adventurers that have to deal with what comes after you kill the BBEG. Adorable loves between characters and even though I found it predictable, I was routing for it the whole entire time. I wish there was more books that feature these specific characters.

Sweet story, but very predictable.

This is a sweet story, but doesn't have much else. The writing in the first few chapters isn't that great. They dragged on entirely too long. I almost stopped listening because it was so tedious. The misunderstandings between the characters were a bit overdone and honestly annoying. Like, a Scooby Doo plot. The development felt shallow and I didn't feel like any of the characters had much depth. But it was a sweet story and the voice acting from the narrator was pretty good so there's that. If you're a young adult and want a fun, easy fantasy inspired slice of life love story, then you'll enjoy this. Otherwise, don't bother.

Funny and heartwarming

Great book. Uplifting, funny, and adorable. I laughed out loud several times and I really enjoyed the flirting.

A wonderful story!

This was truly an enjoyable listen. I found the characters to be relatable and entertaining. My only complaint is how the story began. I would have much preferred it to have begun earlier in their adventure.

It's worth giving a shot.

It's a good listen. If you were on the fence I'd give it ago, I put this one off myself for a while. I like how it ended, though some middle points were a bit meh. Overall not many issues other than miscomunications being the biggest source of conflict. It feels like a very modern take on fantacy, it shows in the word choices, but it's okay.

So sweet

I don’t know how those two didn’t know that the other was in love. It was a fun take on an almost modern fantasy.

The voice actor did a great job. My only complaint was how he voiced Shawna. It always took me back a second when the character spoke.

I can’t wait to read more by this author .

well written, but the plot did very little for me

the preformace was great, but the plot was entirely driven by the lack of healthy communication between the two main love interest characters. while in general I dislike storyles like this, I take bigger issue with the ending, instead of actually character growth thought better communication a kind of lat minute resolution was shoehorned in, witch became necicery because of the arbitrary time limit

Wish For More

I really enjoy the story. All the characters were great. My favorite parts were Arek try wooing his friends, but it goes wrong the same time. My Favorite character were Matt and the Crow. I wish we go more story on Matt side and how he felt will Arek was trying to woo his Friends. We got little of it but wish for more. The Narrator was great. He did a wonderful job tell the story. I just wish more Matt side for the story and more of the adventure before Arek was the king. There adventure sound really fun to read and to get to know the character little bit more. The book was really great.

Perfect for those who LOVE "badasses-in-distress"~

The peril is GREAT
The resulting fluff because of the peril is GREAT
The characters are GREAT
The comedy and flailing around trying to rebuild the kingdom? GREAT
The copious swearing? YES. PERFECT. Emphasizes the comedy and reminds the readers these are common teenagers in over their heads and a lot on their plate. I've previously been annoyed by some other fantasy dialogue being super serious or flowery and fancy and in ways that give me doubts on whether this was an actual person speaking. No such problem with this book!
The obviousness between the pining characters? GREAT. It's like I'm in the corner of the room overhearing their banter and smirking at their misfortune and want to goad them on. WHICH BRINGS ME TO:
THE NARRATOR IS GREAT. I loved the tones he put into even the simple "UGH"s and the sarcastic jabs and the panic
