Publisher's summary

Three generations of women. A devastating connection. Can they endure their personal tragedies?

North Carolina, 1893. Thirteen-year-old Maggie Winters lives with daily danger. As the daughter of a former slave, her secret quest for education can’t protect her for long. When vicious racists bent on teaching blacks their place attack her home, Maggie’s innocence dies, but she barely survives.

Nearly 60 years later, a frightened mother calls on Maggie to perform an exorcism on a girl who talks to spirits. As she prepares to help, Maggie discovers a family secret that resonates with her own painful past.

When more skeletons come to light, she must re-open the wounds of the past to heal the mother, the daughter, and herself.

School of Hard Knocks is a poignant work of historical fiction. If you like sweeping sagas, politically-charged stories, and women overcoming adversity, then you’ll love Theresa Crater’s inspiring novel.

Very moving book ...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was difficult to hear all of the racially charged (sayings, treatment, etc.), but necessary for the time. The history of our country is difficult for us to relate to, but through a book, we can feel both empathy and sympathy alike whilst reading. The author was poignant and eloquent. I loved that the story spanned across 6 generations during the times of the civil rights movement.
The narrator offered the perfect voices to keep the narrative flowing through the chapters. I felt like I was listening during the different times throughout history in the book while she was reading. I would most definitely listen to a book by the narrator again.
I only caveat in the book is the child molestation scenes. I feel as though the book could have done without those scenes. While I realize these things do happen, it was very uncomfortable for me to read.
