What would you do if the man of your dreams hides the soul of a killer?

Jim Beckett was everything she'd ever dreamed of...But two years after Tess married the decorated cop and bore his child, she helped put him behind bars for savagely murdering ten women. Even locked up in a maximum security prison, he vowed he would come after her and make her pay. Now the cunning killer has escaped - and the most dangerous game of all begins....

After a lifetime of fear, Tess will do something she's never done before. She's going to learn to protect her daughter and fight back, with the help of a burned-out ex-marine. As the largest manhunt four states have ever seen mobilizes to catch Beckett, the clock winds down to the terrifying reunion between husband and wife. And Tess knows that this time, her only choices are to kill - or be killed.

I like Lisa Gardener and most of her books. I read the reviews on this book and decided I would have to try it. A good decision. Once I started listening I couldn’t stop. If you like a thriller with some true feeling this is it.

Great Thrilling Story

The story was pretty good but predictable. What ruined it for me was the narrator. Every sentence sounded identical, almost like she was trying to create tension by ending every sentence on an up beat. Kind of reminded me of Captain Kirk. Definitely a narrator I’ll avoid in future.

Annoying narration

I’ve enjoy the Detective D.D. Warren series, Teresa Leone, and the FBI agent (who’s name escapes me) so when I saw this book I was like, “I trust Lisa’s writing so instant download?” Well....part of me wish I would have read the reviews first.

First, Sara Zimmerman did a good job with the work but felt a bit of, “wait what happened!?” At some points. Not sure if it was the writing or the performance that I missed stuff. But overall she made the book better for reading it.

On to the content. Not sure if this is crime thriller erotic or level 5 romance crime thriller but...well I have real mixed feelings on this story. Wish I would have known the erotica/romance angle going into it because I expected something much different from the female protagonist based on her other works. All women are abused and trying to heal in the book and we never left that world. And the men were horrible to disgusting most of the time. But Lisa does create a bad guy you hate and a compelling crime filed world. I had to stop and regroup listening to it a few times. There is one scene which shows evil that I almost quit on the book but it did make the ending a bit more satisfying. Think this was her first outing in this type of book and...well the sex didn’t usually feel enjoyable but forced. Like the story minus half the sex scenes would have been better.

I’ll be more hesitant on reading another in this series and read the reviews. I’ve enjoyed so much of Lisa Gardner’s works so I will give her another chance in this series most likely. The good was dirty, evil was true evil, I felt emotion through parts of the book, but the weakness and abuse of the ladies was hard to handle with all the other strong women Lisa Gardner tends to write.

Went in blind knowing other Lisa Gardner works and don’t recommend it
