Publisher's summary

Beware the spirits of Lake Manuxet.

Don't look out towards Knob Island at night. That was the warning Douglas' grandfather gave him as a boy. Now returning to the shores of Lake Manuxet as a grown man, with his twin sister and their ailing grandmother in tow for a final, nostalgic visit, Douglas begins to experience frightful things in his cherished childhood vacation spot.

Just what is it that claws its way out of the lake each night, only to approach their cabin? What mysteries does the remote lake hold? Are the horrors Douglas experiences genuine, or is he simply inheriting the madness that seems to run in his family? What is the true nature of the cryptic warning his grandfather gave him so many years ago about the small island at the center of Lake Manuxet?

What begins as a sentimental pilgrimage to a once-enjoyable vacation spot rapidly deteriorates into a fight for survival and sanity.

The Lonesome Dead is a standalone novel of supernatural suspense and terror by Ambrose Ibsen.

A very dark ghost story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook because in addition to being creepy and entertaining, it makes you stop and wonder what secrets people carry with them in life.

What did you like best about this story?

The final truthful revelation of the grandmother was shocking.

What about Gary Tiedemann’s performance did you like?

A very good performance. His voice was able to capture the frustration and melancholy of the characters.

A very creepy listen!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, the author does a very good job at keeping the atmosphere creepy. He also writes in such a way as to always keep you on your toes and asking "why?".

What other book might you compare The Lonesome Dead to and why?

Probably books like The Moving In series and The Slaughter series because of an entity that has issues with a past life.

What about Gary Tiedemann’s performance did you like?

I liked that he always made you know how the character was feeling. His voice just reflected the mood and tenseness that was needed for a book such as this.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions, mainly just curiosity at why such an entity would be terrorizing otherwise innocent people.

The Lonesome Dead: A Ghost Story

A story of betrayal, murder and madness. The ghost only wants the truth to be told. Or is there more she wants?
At first I was disappointed by the ending of this story, after thinking about it for a while, I loved it and thought it perfect for this story.
The storyline is easy to follow and the writing creative.

Gary Tiedemann does a wonderful job narrating. The emotions he adds to the story bring it to life.

Too Repetetive

This story could have been very good, but it was so repetitive that a couple of times I thought I accidentally hit "rewind". If, further into a story, you're still trying to drive home a point that was made earlier, at least change the wording a bit. Not sure I'll try this author again. The narrator was good, though.

Chilling end

The Lonesome Dead had a good mysterious ghostly story. I found the pace a little slow for me and the needless details a bit cumbersome. The end was one hundred times better than the first half. I felt I was walking through mud to get to the good stuff. when the good stuff arrived, I was scared, happy and ready for it.

The writing is, of course, good, in depth and almost too descriptive. I mean, for goodness sakes, we even went to the bathroom with Douglas. I liked the ghostly aspects more than the other ramblings of the main character, Douglas.

I am glad I listened to the audiobook, I just would have cut a little of the naming of the fish in the lake out.

The narration was wonderful. The narrator, Gary Tiedemann had an expressive voice that led to a greater feeling of fear when that part came up. I think if you like the descriptiveness of say, Stephen King, you might really enjoy this.

I am giving a four, due to the ending, the twists at the end, and the narration. It is worth giving a listen to.

Suspenseful & Intriguing - Definately a Must Read!

This book is definitely a must read - very suspenseful and intriguing. I was unable to turn this book off and listened to it in one sitting. Ambrose Ibsen manages to develop a great storyline while maintaining the suspense and creepiness factor for an excellent story.

In the beginning, the author begins to develop the story with a lot of detail regarding the family. As you get further along in the story, you understand why. The story and characters are extremely well written and the author writes in such a way that you feel you know these characters personally. Also, Mr. Ibsen, manages to evoke your emotions with his writing skill while still keeping you on the edge of your seat and wanting more.

For the narration performance, Gary Tiedemann provided an excellent performance. He portrays the characters perfectly and presents them to you in such a way that allows you to develop a relationship with each. He has excellent tone, pace and inflection and adds emotions to the characters which enhances the story even more. Five stars for both Mr. Ibsen and Mr. Tiedemann.

The book wasn't scary to me. I enjoyed the twist and the writing style of the author. If anything, I listened on because of the writing style. Otherwise, I wasn't scared.

Lonesome Dead

I loved this story! At first it reminded me of cherished places in my life, then it got hairy. The things some people will do to make a family can come back to haunt you. Doug and twin Celeste take grandma back to the family vacation spot. Terrible secrets are thought to be the ramblings of a senile old lady...until they see the truth. Gary Tiedemann is awesome with the narration.I was given this book free for an honest review.

Family secrets exposed

Any additional comments?

Quick, creative, eerie, suspenseful and entertaining story.

Obviously something odd is going on, the story keeps you guessing almost up to the very end. Not being able to figure out what exactly is going on keeps you glued to the story.

What secrets does your family hide?
What was suppose to be one memorable final family trip turns out to be just that, but not for the reasons that were intended. Finding out there are dark secrets in your family's past that are related to you can change your whole world.

Gary Tiedmann did a great job with the narration. Great voice. Clearly spoken. Smooth even pace. Really good character voices. His was able to convey the emotions each character was feeling. His narration added to the enjoyment of the story.
