One more minute.

This was my mantra listening to this book, and like the narrator battling alcoholism, I often succumbed to listening to this like an audio Netflix show. I binged the hell out of this

Malfi’s story is very interesting and while it reminded me of It like so may others, it also reminded me of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes, but set in a contemporary setting. Malfi’s writing is engaging and created clear images in my mind.

I also found Hempel to be a fantastic narrator and very easy to listen to. The audio of this book is first class.

Engaging story, great narration

I agree with most of the reviews that this seems heavily inspired by It, but written Malfi’s style. That delayed my decision to purchase the book because it sounded like it might be a ripoff of one of my favorite King novels. I’m glad I decided to buy, the story was engaging from start to finish. The story can be similarly summarized as It but only in summary and not in detail, this book tells its own tale.

Just once, a good ending, please

I keep giving Malfi chances, but am going to have to stop. His endings are always bad. Little Girls should have been enough to make me avoid him, but his writing is pretty strong. Enough that I keep giving him another shot. This one has good characters, and the narrator is great, but after all the setup the ending is just another dud. I'm tempted to try December Park, but may have to fight it off.

Loved it!

I am glad I bought this one, pretty new to this author and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.

Great Childhood Story

This is a suspenseful story about friends and childhood. It really pulls you back to your childhood days when life wasn’t so easy. The end had me in tears.

Great all around!

Great story, character development, and narration. Wasn’t my usual style of book but it was the best I’ve listened to in a while. I could see this being made into a movie (and I would definitely go see it!).

really enjoyed this book. Reminded me more of dreamcatcher then It. Kept me entertained and was well read.

Loved the group of people

This was an interesting book. It’s my first Ronald Malfi, and it reminded me of how Bentley Little finds horror in the mundane. I enjoyed it even though I wish there were a few more terrifying horror elements. There’s also a bit of cosmic horror thrown in at the end and I’d have loved more of that.

For almost two decades since Jamie Warren left home, he’s run from his past. As children, he and his two best friends, Mia and Clay, and brother met a magician in the woods near Jamie’s home. At first, the magician was a fascinating addition to Jamie’s boring, mundane life. The man taught them magic tricks and became a friend. But as time went on, Jamie realized there wasn’t something right about the man.

Now Jamie has returned home to take care of his brother after his mom’s death. Events are beginning to repeat themselves, which draws Mia, Clay, Jamie, and Dennis back together. Can they figure out what’s going on before more evil events take place?

I enjoyed the relationships between the four main characters. Dennis has an intellectual disability and the group treats him just like one of the gang, and includes him in everything. Dennis’s intuition is a key part of the plot. I felt like the four of them are all real people with dynamic backstories and lives.

Good story

The drown-out cave sequence toward the end dragged on so much I zoned out.
