The gripping story of a Vietnam vet whose secret past threatens his family, career, and honor, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Plum Island.

He is a good man, a brilliant corporate executive, an honest, handsome family man admired by men and desired by women. But sixteen years ago Ben Tyson was a lieutenant in Vietnam.

There, in 1968, the men under his command committed a murderous atrocity—and together swore never to tell the world what they had done. Not the press, army justice, and the events he tried to forget have caught up with Ben Tyson. His family, his career, and his personal sense of honor hang in the balance. And only one woman can reveal the truth of his past—and set him free.

I've listened to a number of DeMille's highest rated books and this was the best! could NOT stop listenung. It did not seem as long as it should have and I wanted to know how it would end, but did nit want the book to end. Wow! I'd say more but I hate spoliers.

The best DeMille so far!!

I read some of the reviews prior to ordering this book. I have read many of the other books written by DeMille, and agreed with most of the five star ratings of those books. But, I must say this did not start slow. It grabs you right from the beginning and holds your attention all the way. Another great pairing of De Mille and Brick.

I read this book when it first came out, I absolutely loved it then. Listening to Scott Brick narrate it was time well spent.

Fantastic

There were times I almost gave up on this title as it seemed to just drone on and not get anywhere, dwelling too long on subplots and insignificant events. It did finally pick up and deliver a good story. I was most disappointed in Scott Brick's performance. He is one of my favorite narrators, but his reading didn't distinguish well between characters, even the male and female characters and I was often left to wonder who the heck said what to whom.

Rambled at times but picked up and delivered

It is as if Nelson DeMille straddles two different worlds of popular fiction; that of wry thrillers with it's nose in today's news and it's tongue getting ever so cautiously close to cheek, and that of emotional and wrenching individual stories based on Viet Nam. This book is mostly the latter with a dash here and there of DeMille's wisecracking heroes which perfectly breaks what might otherwise be continual tension and heartache. DeMille served in Viet Nam and his characters, places, events, and all that went with that horrible time rings solid and true. This book mostly takes place in the present, the mid-80's when this book was written, and flashes back several times to the battle for Hue to relieve the anguish of that time and it's effect on the present. Ben Tyson was a lieutenant in Viet Nam who may have participated in a massacre and in the present, as a civilian, the Army is trying to prosecute Tyson. You see it all as Tyson saw it then and now and in neither case does he, or the reader, want to be there, but you are stuck for the duration and you cannot put it down. This is a remarkable book where nearly all of the scenes set in the present are lengthy, two character dialogues. It sounds tedious but it is not by any means. It is engrossing, intelligent, mysterious, and a window into things that are very much still with us as we send our citizens into more wars that they would not want to do over.

This is an outstanding piece of work and one that is highly recommended.

Remarkable and genuine
