Welcome to the fabled Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world. Told from Sutter's sardonic and often hilarious point of view, and laced with sexual passion and suspense, THE GOLD COAST is Nelson DeMille's captivating story of friendship and seduction, love and betrayal. Nelson DeMille is one of the best of modern mystery/suspense/thriller authors. He has written GREAT stand alone novels such as Mayday and The General's Daughter and his John Corey series is a good as any espionage series ever written. Gold Coast and Gate House, which is really a 2 book series, are disappointing for DeMille. All of his books except The Quest are in my Audible library. Gold Coat and Gate House are my only disappointments. The books are fine for romance novels, but lots of authors do the genre better.

Not typical DeMille!

This is not like the novels that DeMille usually does but it is really very good, and the performance of Christian Rummel is spot on.. I try to review each book I buy from Audible because I depend on reviews, myself, when choosing a book to purchase.. My credits are dear to me.. LOL Because of the reviews of the follow-up novel, "The Gate House," I will not be getting it and perhaps this is one of those times when a sequel shouldn't have been written.. "Gold Coast" is a great novel on it's on, and like other greats books who have tried "sequels", such as "Gone With the Wind," I guess "The Gate House" is rather "anticlimatic," repetitious and downright "silly" at times, according to the reviews. That being the case, enjoy "Gold Coast," because it is a great listen!!

I loved it!!

Exceptionally gripping novel about old money, organized crime, and so much more. Narrator does a remarkable job giving different characters different accents and vocal affects, really among the most impressive narrations I have ever heard.

Great book, even better narration.

This is a great book. I listen to it when I am driving and I would look for reasons to drive somewhere. I loved the characters and it is very well written.

But certainly an enjoyable listen. DeMille’s first person narrative was, in my mind, so wryly insouciant as to belie the very credibility of the story, and throughout, I wondered if should simply conclude I was being taken for a ride by the tongue in cheek delivery. But it worked, because I binge-listened and although I could scarcely relate to any of the characters, they fascinated me. I disagree that it’s Nelson DeMille’s best, but it is certainly one of his most mesmerizing.

A difficult book to rate…
