才気にあふれ、世話好きな性格は周りの人々を惹きつけ、たくさん悩みながらもよく笑い、よくしゃべる人だったそうです。
そんな芥川は、東京帝国大学に入学した翌年、高校の同級だった久米正雄らと共に第三次「新思潮」を創刊し、小説や翻訳を発表しました。
次いで第四次「新思潮」を創刊の際に掲載した『鼻』が夏目漱石に認められ、文壇に登ることとなりました。
その後新聞社に入社し、記者としてではなく専業作家として意欲的に執筆活動を続けました。
芥川は、漱石や森鴎外から文体や表現の影響を受けたり、キリシタンもの、江戸を舞台にしたものなど題材に応じて文体を変えたりと、意識的な小説の書き方をしていました。
また、鈴木三重吉により創刊された児童雑誌「赤い鳥」には、初となる童話作品『蜘蛛の糸』を発表、その後も同雑誌を中心に童話作品を相次いで発表し、幅広く作品を世に残しています。
夜、盛遠が築土の外で、月魄を眺めながら、落葉を踏んで物思いに耽っている。
「もう月の出だな。いつもは月が出るのを待ちかねる己も、今日ばかりは明くなるのがそら恐しい。今までの己が一夜の中に失われて、明日からは人殺になり果てるのだと思うと、こうしていても、体が震えて来る。この両の手が血で赤くなった時を想像して見るが好い。その時の己は、己自身にとって、どのくらい呪わしいものに見えるだろう。それも己の憎む相手を殺すのだったら、己は何もこんなに心苦しい思いをしなくてもすんだのだが、己は今夜、己の憎んでいない男を殺さなければならない。
己はあの男を以前から見知っている。渡左衛門尉と云う名は、今度の事に就いて知ったのだが、男にしては柔しすぎる、色の白い顔を見覚えたのは、いつの事だかわからない。それが袈裟の夫だと云う事を知った時、己が一時嫉妬を感じたのは事実だった。しかしその嫉妬も今では己の心の上に何一つ痕跡を残さないで、綺麗に消え失せてしまっている。だから渡は己にとって、恋の仇とは云いながら、憎くもなければ、恨めしくもない……
