You may not recognize my name-or my face for that matter-but it's very likely you've seen me at work. I've managed to cram quite a bit into my thirty-year acting career. In fact I've helped put more bums on cinema seats than Will Smith or Tom Hanks. Who else can say that they've helped destroy a Death Star? Defeated an evil sorceress? Taught magic to Harry Potter? For the first time Reed's close family has agreed to collaborate on a project about the man himself.

Taking Dennis Hopper's words - "That's what it's all about, man" - to heart, they abandoned their comfortable upper-middle-class life and gave Illeana a childhood filled with hippies, goats, free spirits, and free love. Illeana writes, "Since it was all out of my control, I began to think of my life as a movie, with a Dennis Hopper-like father at the center of it." I Blame Dennis Hopper is a rollicking, funny, at times tender exploration of the way movies can change our lives.

In 1963, 30-year-old Friedman - who had recently quit his job as a Boston advertising executive and returned to his hometown of New York to become a theatrical producer - opened a coffee house for Broadway performers called the Improvisation. His goal? Simply to make a living, and if all went according to plan, to also make enough professional contacts to be able to mount his first Broadway show within a year's time. Later shortened to the Improv, its first West 44th Street location was in a seedy section of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen.

Something to Monkey around with
Davy Jones does a wonderful job of telling his story and how he came to be one of the Monkeys, but he doesn't give us much about his castmates or the rest of his life. This is a fast moving book and leaves out a lot of details, yet is enjoyable because he is obviously a man who has enjoyed all the ups and downs of his life.

Monkee
Not as much Monkee information as I would have hoped for or expected. Davy's rather thick accent forced me to have to really pay attention in order to understand. Still quite entertaining all in all.

Good book!
How wonderful to hear Davy tell his story. It was entertaining, funny, human. I wish it had been longer.

Great to hear Davy's voice again!
What did you love best about They Made a Monkee Out of Me?
I love the fact that Davy admitted that being a Monkee was fun; at least in the beginning.
I also loved hearing about his early childhood and about his parents.
What was one of the most memorable moments of They Made a Monkee Out of Me?
When Davy talked about how He and the other Monkees really didn't make that much money and how they were not represented properly.
What about Davy Jones’s performance did you like?
I loved all of it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, its only about 2hours.
Any additional comments?
The thing I really didn't like is that this is an abridged version. You can tell where they have cut things out.

Laughed Cried
Davy did a great job putting his thoughts down. He was such a funny guy, great singer, actor, etc. It's so sad he's gone now, the world lost a great man which I'm sure was due to the last nut of a wife he had. The way she nagged him about the smallest most ridiculous things mayve caused too much stress in him causing his body to break down. I believe he was getting ready to divorce her when he passed.

Hey, Hey, He's a Monkee (The Cute One)
What was one of the most memorable moments of They Made a Monkee Out of Me?
Listening to Davy Jones talking about his family.
What does Davy Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Reading a biography is fine, but when the biographer gets to read his own life it gives a little added extra. The nuances of voice when recalling certain events and memories, gives you an idea of what it was like to live through it. He was a real entertainer and he loved the show. You could tell by listening to him that it was the show that he loved best.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Davy Jones speaks of his mother's death. You can tell it affected him deeply.
Any additional comments?
I had the pleasure of seeing one of the Monkee Reunion shows at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel back in 1986. It was a dream come true for me because I "fell in love" with Davy Jones when I was nine years old and have had a life long crush ever since. Being able to hear him read his biography made it "come alive." This book may not be for everyone, but if you were a Monkee's fan, like me, you will enjoy Davy's perspective of life on that run away train.

Good listen!!!!
This is a great book! Even though it's short, Davy gets straight to the point and tells his story. No real shocking details, but a fun "read."

I was in love with Davy Jones at 4 years old-1967
He did retain his Mancunian accent and it was a little difficult to understand but for the most part he told an honest story of his life and it sounded like so much fun!
