About this listen

Aiming to cash in on the success of The Beatles, American television producers created a television show that featured a quartet of fun-loving musicians, achieving instant success with The Monkees. Davy Jones, a young, aspiring actor was cast in the series, which aired for the first time on September 12, 1966. Within two months, the show had moved into the Top 20, and the Monkees' first single and album both soared to #1 on the charts. Pop culture, pop music, and Davy Jones would never be the same.

In this lively and entertaining memoir, Jones recounts his life and career—from The Monkees' beginnings to the 1980s reunion and revival—with funny, nostalgic, and revealing memories of the glamorous people and high-rolling deals that lie behind the scenes of show business.

the depths of his heart

What made the experience of listening to They Made a Monkee Out of Me the most enjoyable?

Davy's voice was always distinctive, and in this you hear not only his lovely tones, but his lovely soul.

What did you like best about this story?

Davy narrating about his reconciliation with Micky Dolenz, and how he developed so much more respect for him after that.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both laughed and cried. A picture developed of a man who trusted people, trusted the world, and was frequently abused for it, and whose talent was enormous.

Any additional comments?

Peter Tork said that the saddest thing about Davy's passing was that most would never know the depth and breadth of this man's heart, that Davy was the most heartfelt man he'd ever known. This book, and Davy's voice narrating it, reveals that heart.

Something to Monkey around with

Davy Jones does a wonderful job of telling his story and how he came to be one of the Monkeys, but he doesn't give us much about his castmates or the rest of his life. This is a fast moving book and leaves out a lot of details, yet is enjoyable because he is obviously a man who has enjoyed all the ups and downs of his life.

Nice to hear Davys voice!

Not much substance. No aha moments. Not terribly interesting. Doesn't have much to say about anything 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Good listen!!!!

This is a great book! Even though it's short, Davy gets straight to the point and tells his story. No real shocking details, but a fun "read."

Monkee

Not as much Monkee information as I would have hoped for or expected. Davy's rather thick accent forced me to have to really pay attention in order to understand. Still quite entertaining all in all.

A hundred percent Davy!

Since it was written in 1986 it’s very short but just so essentially Davy Jones. It’s funny and real, making me nostalgic for when he was still alive 💖
One of my favorite quick listens about a Manchester cowboy 🐄

I was in love with Davy Jones at 4 years old-1967

He did retain his Mancunian accent and it was a little difficult to understand but for the most part he told an honest story of his life and it sounded like so much fun!
