Publisher's Summary

An eye-popping peek into the entertainment industry from the magnetic force who has worked with an impeccable roster of stars throughout his storied career.

In the course of his legendary career as a manager, an agent, and a producer, Shep Gordon has worked with and befriended some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, from Alice Cooper to Bette Davis, Raquel Welch to Groucho Marx, Blondie to Jimi Hendrix, Sylvester Stallone to Salvador Dali, Luther Vandross to Teddy Pendergrass. He is also credited with inventing the "celebrity chef" and has worked with Nobu Matsuhisa, Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Roger Vergé, and many others, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

In this wonderfully engaging memoir, the charismatic entertainment legend recalls his life, from his humble beginnings as a "shy, no self-esteem Jewish nebbisher kid with no ambition" in Oceanside, Long Island, to his unexpected rise as one of the most influential and respected personalities in show business, revered for his kindness, charisma - and fondness for a good time.

Gordon shares riotous anecdotes and outrageous accounts of his freewheeling, globe-trotting experiences with some of the biggest celebrities of the past five decades, including his first meeting with Janice Joplin in 1968, when the raspy singer punched him in the face.

Told with incomparable humor and heart, They Call Me Supermensch is a sincere, hilarious behind-the-scenes look at the worlds of music and entertainment from the consummate Hollywood insider.

It's like he's never seen the words before

I love the story! Good stuff. Shep is reading his own words that he wrote, but at times it's like he's seeing them for the first time. I still enjoyed it immensely.

Wasn't What I Thought

It wasn't what I thought it would be and that's a good thing. And I can hear Shep saying that so let's start with performance. Spoken in Shep's voice, which is somewhat monotone, could be boring - isn't. I think it actually adds to have his accent as another feature. Now onto the autobiography... All the sex, drugs (for me, especially the drugs), and rock n roll, was getting a little tedious in the beginning, but I have to say I feel the story is honestly told; many lessons learned, and and shared - the bottom line, fascinating.
PS Shep, somewhere in this house is a tape of "The Duelist". Faults, yes, but we always felt it was up there with Barry Lyndon. So, "Peace out." and have a good rest of your run. Thanks.

What a fantastic and inspiring story!

I loved this book so much and especially loved hearing it in Shep’s own voice. I had no idea he was responsible for such a transformation in the food industry and was the force behind many musical talent that I love. He is Forest Gump before there was Forest Gump but with style, class and even more kindness. A super mensch indeed. I will not soon forget this story. I listened to it on one long drive and boy, did it make it memorable. Thank you, Shep, thank you.

Great Inside Look

A different kind of manager, philosophy and personal relationships. The author seems like a wonderful man, the book was well written, insightful, and a pleasure to listen to. The only negative that I found, in my humble opinion, was the constant name dropping and self promotion, which was contradictory to the stories and life he was telling. The narration took a chapter or two to get used to although it does grow on you and becomes quite soothing and well done. It is a book that I would recommend to anyone interested in an unconventional management style, in a positive way, for the music stars of the 80's and the chefs of the 90's forward.

Amazing life story

This is one of the very few books that made me laugh and cry sometimes at the same time. It's such an amazing story of a life well leaved and well told with strong values that guided Shep throughout and with spontaneity.
