Publisher's Summary

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from 40 years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves

    "A compelling story cleverly executed"

Initially I thought I had made a poor choice but by chapter 3 I was becoming engrossed in the story line. I thouroughly enjoyed the switching between main characters and the twists and turns they took, yet the story was not fragmented because of this and you never knew what was going to happen next. Its Graphic in places which some may find too much, however I think this added to the raw power of the story. The narrator I found easy to listen to and it did not distract me from content as others have. I thouroughly enjoyed this book and found it really hard to put down.

    "Am I missing something?"

Im sorry, I have really tried my best to get into this book but it is far too drawn out, far too dull and there is far too much detail boringly spelt out.
I understood that from other reviews it may take a while to get into the story, that it is not instant.. but 4hrs and 40 mins later and I have had to delete it off my ipod!
It really does not get going and Im afraid that if a story has taken over 4hrs to even try to grip my imagination then I have lost all interest in it.
I accept I am obviously in the minority with my opinion, but be prepared to be bored!!

    "A great listen"

I agree with others who said it was hard going with the names but well worth sticking with. If you google 'Stieg Larsson island' you
will find some sites with maps of the island in English and Swedish. You will find these really useful.

"The girl with the dragon tattoo"

This took a long time to get into and I thought the reader had quite a flat voice. This made it difficult for me to listen to him for too long. However, when the plot started moving, I really enjoyed it and I advise all listeners to stick with it !

Murder mysteries are not really my thing but I was seduced by the hype and thought I'd give this a go.

I found it predictable as well as far fetched.

The narrator is not good at doing women's voices, scenes with more than one female end up sounding like a schizophrenic transvestite talking to himself.

"Salandar & Bloomkist not to be missed!"

A truly gripping crime writer, as others have noted it did take a couple of chapters to get the gist of what was going on, but after that I was hooked! really recommend it although there were some nights when I fell asleep with the lights on after listening. what a scarydey cat!

    "A book to listen!"

I loved listening to this book, an excellent story line with great characters. The Swedish names and places was pronounced precisely. I can't wait to listen to the next book - The Girl Who Played with Fire which is currently on my wishlist for next month!

"Great characters in a fascinating landscape"

I held off watching the recent film before finishing the book and I'm glad I did - even though the film is very good, as it happens!
There is a lot of detail to wade through, all of which might be relevant and the mystery itself is involving enough, but it's the characters themselves who make the journey worthwhile. And in Lisbeth Salander the author created a masterpiece - she is complex, unpredictable and driven by her mysterious past. I'm not a connoisseur of crime fiction - but this struck me as a good balance of meticulous fact-finding and thrilling surprises. The strong, steady narration made sense of the difficult Swedish words and carried me through the lurid bits sedately.
