Publisher's summary
In the year of our Lord 1141, August comes in golden as a lion, and two monks ride into the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul bringing with them disturbing news of war...and a mystery.
The strangers tell how the strife between the Empress Maud and King Stephan has destroyed the town of Winchester and their priory. Now Brother Humilis, who is handsome, gaunt, and very ill, and Brother Fidelis, youthful, comely (and totally mute) must seek refuge at Shrewsury. And from the moment he meets them, Brother Cadfael senses something deeper than their common vows binds these two good brothers. What the link is he can only guess...what it will lead to is beyond his imagining. But as Brother Humilis' health fails, and nothing can stop death's lengthening shade, Brother Cadfael faces a poignant test of his discretion and his beliefs as he unravels a secret so great it can destroy a life, a future, and a holy order.
Critic reviews
"Absorbing, superbly crafted....Unflagging tension which builds to a swift, satisfying climax....Peters never disappoints" (Kirkus Reviews)

It is the late 14th century, a dangerous time beset by war and plague. Nicholas Barber, a young and wayward cleric, stumbles across a group of travelling players and compounds his sins by joining them. Yet the town where they perform reveals another drama: a young woman is to be hanged for the murder of a 12-year-old boy. But as the actors rehearse, they discover that the truth about the boy's death has yet to be revealed.

Story
It was that transitional time of the world when man first brought the clang of iron and the reek of smoke to the lands which before had echoed only with fairy voices. In that dawn of man and death of magic, there yet remained one last untouched place - the small forest of Ealdwood - which kept the magic intact and protected the old ways. And there was one who dwelt there, Arafel the Sidhe, who had more pride and love of the world as it used to be than any of her kind.

Alexander's beauty, strength and defiance were apparent from birth, but his boyhood honed those gifts into the makings of a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty, teaching Alexander politics and vengeance from the cradle. His love for the youth Hephaistion taught him trust, while Aristotle's tutoring provoked his mind and Homer's Iliad fuelled his aspirations.

Story
Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Story
Termed the Uncle Tom's Cabin of the southwestern Indians and the first protest novel of California, Ramona is the story of 3 cultures - Indian, Mexican, and Anglo - locked in combat. The upheaval and injustice are humanized through the romance of a beautiful half-Indian orphan who grow up as the ward of Señora Moreno in privileged surroundings, then falls in love with an Indian and joins him in a life of poverty and tragedy. The Ramona Pageant in Hemet, California, based on this romance, has played each year since 1923, reenacting the transition period between Mexican traditions and the new U.S. and state governments.

Among Peters’ best
This is among my favorite of the Brother Cadfael adventures, and most mysterious of murder mysteries. The story is less centered on Brother Cadfael than most, lifting up other members of the community, but as always Peters’ rich portraits of the inner workings of people and detailed knowledge of medieval life bring to life of a far distant world. Roe Kendall’s superb narrative excellently complement the story.

I know it may seem weird for me to title this was very refreshing, but with all the whodunits that are filled with murder and other scandal, the solving of what could be called a Cold Case was quite a surprise. I really enjoyed this novel.

Very enjoyable
The story was enjoyable, the narration was excellent. I did figure out the twist at about the halfway point in the story, but the reveal and resolution were excellent.

Another Excellent Mystery
This is exactly what the title says it is. This is a fun, straightforward mystery in the classic sense. It is set in a medieval monastery in Shrewsbury, England by one of the founders of the historical mystery.

Cadfael pulls off a caper
No murder here just the mayhem of mistaken identities. The tangled mystery becomes clear fairly early on in the tale but how it will be untangled isn't revealed until our favorite Benedictine brother pulls off An Excellent Caper.
