Publisher's Summary

Number-one New York Times best-seller Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, True Blood, Midnight Crossroad) delivers the first thriller in a new trilogy that presents a chilling alternate history of the US where everyone believes in magic - but no one is sure whether they can trust it.

After the assassination of FDR in the 1930s, the US collapses and is picked off by the UK, Canada, Mexico, and Russia. We find ourselves in the Southwestern states, now known as Texoma. It is here that the gunnie Lizbeth Rose tries to piece out a life, running security on runs from Texoma across the border to Mexico, where work and prospects are stronger.

When two Russian magicians come looking for a man named Alex Karkarov, they hire Lizbeth to find him or his family, but there are problems: The man they're looking for is dead, but he has a daughter they now need to find, as an ever-growing set of sorcerers and gunnies do not want them to succeed. It's a good thing Lizbeth is a deadly gunfighter; too bad she hates sorcerers, even the ones on whom she has to learn to rely.

Number-one New York Times best-seller Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse mysteries, True Blood, Midnight Crossroad) returns to fantasy in a taut thriller set in a US where magic is an acknowledged truth, but disreputable.

Interesting and worth checking out

Really interesting world building in society and characters. It’s different from my usual books; including all of Harris’ books that I’ve read. It does have the feel of a western to me; with a taste of dystopia.
I wasn’t sure about Kaminsky’s narration at the start, but it became clear that her style and voice fit Gunny Rose and her world.

Boring

I have read & loved basically everything Charlaine Harris has written but this title was just boring. The story was slow & the characters weren’t interesting nor likable. And to be honest the story just
didn’t feel fleshed out almost like a bad ghost writer wrote most of it.

Gunnie for Hire

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3
When I saw that Ms. Charlaine Harris has a new series coming out I knew I had to give it a try. I love the Sookie Stackhouse series. I have not read Midnight Texas yet but I love the TV series. So I grabbed an audio copy of An Easy Death, book one in the Gunnie Rose series.

An Easy Death is a good first book. There is a lot of world building so the book is a bit slow. But it does pick up as the story goes on. Lizbeth Rose is a gun for hire and she is good at her job. But things are not going right for her. Her prior job is gone and now she must figure out her future. Being hired by a pair of Russian Wizards was not on her list of potential jobs. Lizbeth can’t turn down the money that they offer even if it makes her uncomfortable.

This is also my first audiobook narrated by Eva Kaminsky. I really enjoyed having Eva read this story and bring these characters to life. I will be continuing this series on audio as long as they keep Eva as the narrator (I will also be looking up more of her audiobooks).

Looking forward to the next book and were Ms. Harris takes Lizbeth. I really do hope that we get to see more of Eli and a possible relationship between these two.

If you are a fan of Ms. Harris, magic, fantasy and westerns I would suggest giving this new series a try.

I purchased this audio book and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.

An engaging Western tale with a female protagonist

The protagonist of the story is neither sinner nor saint, but is guided by a higher moral code. leave it to Charlaine Harris to create a female character who is both admirable and questionable. Loved it!

Love it!

A very enjoyable new series, the semi-historic Western theme was a good choice. Charlaine Harris writes engaging female characters.

Enjoyable book.

Although different from her other series, I enjoyed listening to this book. I look forward to hearing more about Rose and her adventures.

Not the best...

It was not one of Charlene Harris’s best books or her best writing . I would’ve expected more out of a new series for her. I was a little disappointed overall. If she has a second book I will read it in hopes that it will get better.
