A serial killer is stalking Virginia's young lovers, taking their lives and taunting police with a single clue: a jack of hearts. For two years, the meaning of this card has eluded FBI investigators. But as Scarpetta begins searching the victims' remains for microscopic clues, she begins to suspect that someone in the FBI knows more about the murderer.©1992 Patricia D. This book was a great combination of powerful story telling and a True Crime show.

There were some unnecessary chapters that I skimmed through and still followed the story line perfectly.

If you have listened to other books in this series by the same narrator, it is nice to continue with what you know. I thought that the story was a little bit slow, but was still interesting enough to finish. I will continue with the series because I love the author and the subject matter. If you are a fan of Patricia Cornwell‘s novels, this one fits right in with the rest of them.

It’s a classic!

I like the series. The narrator’s voice bothered me some, but I raised the speed to 1.1 and it helped. The character development and plot twists were good.

*SPOILER ALERY*
As a whole this was a good read, but there were spots were the story line stretched out and waxed poetic about things that could have been omitted.

Also, as a mature and professional M.E I hate to see Kay’s character demeaned every time the story gushes over Mark as if she was still a teenager. Things like not taking personal responsibility for her actions in retrospect of her relationship with Mark or not answering his call way back when he reached out because she “knew what he was going to say and didn’t want to hear it” and then saying he never reached out are all childish.

Stretched out a bit in places
